they suck ass, unless you have a cage
get a cage if your doing anything serious
i saw a 14 go full speed backwards into a wall and it smashed everything up to the cage. driver wouldve undoubtedly been fucked up without it
all depends, I've seen all sorts of wrecks in them. Know acouple guys who rolled them over cageless and walked out.
But you're not going to get in a wreck on an autox course, if you do.... YOU"RE DOING IT WRONG! And are you talking about wheel-to-wheel wrecks or you hitting a wall?
Well here is what Road Atlanta' s concrete wall will do to you if you hit it head on at about 70mph. The frame was tweaked enough that the chassis was a right off.
There's a saying in racing (and this applies even more to tracking your street car). If you can't afford to write it off, don't race it.
i've seen my fair share [on track and off] but the one that sticks in my mind was at a local drift event back in IL where a dude undered the fuck out of his car into a wall... maybe going only 50mph at the time of impact and just crumpled the car up to the firewall
Anyone themselves or know anybody who has wrecked a 240SX on track?
I'm curious to know how they handle at the limit, whether with stock or swaps.
I'll probably be taking mine out someday after I get comfortable on auto-x course, and was interested if anyone had any "on track exchanges".
if all your going to be thinking about while at the track is crashing, than you shouldnt be there. Its a risk no matter what car you take, be sure you have good seatbelts and seats (factory are fine) and go have fun learning how to go fast.
I have been tracking my car for 4 years, seen 2 240 wrecks non-drift related, both were rollovers, one at slow speed due to complete driver negligence and the other was a race car that was off line and rolled 3x, but the cage kept the roof in good enough condition to continue racing the next day.
Lets see, I think there was one when I was working Hyperfest last year where a black S14 in HPDE 2 went off, and hit the tire wall in such a way as to roll it. He had a roll bar in his, as well as some racing seats and harness; and I'm sure that helped him walk away from that. Not sure how fast the impact was, car did not appear to be a write off (by track car standards) from the damage I saw, but I could be wrong.
Then there was my mishap in my first session of my first HPDE at VIR...
+1 on don't hit shit.... +infinity on dont hit others in HPDE.
Last time on Summit this year, i went out for a last run with my HPDE1 student in his stock S14 with just coilovers and HP+ brake pads. Picking up lots of corner speed, adjusting lines and closing in on some form of consistency. Coming through T10 onto the front strait we came in a bit hot with a touch of an early turn in or maybe just a little too much speed. Driver put 2 left wheels off the pavement and tried to get back op on track. In an instant the car pitched 90* and shot back across track to the infield where we slammed into a tirewall in front of a concrete barrier. I hurt my chest pretty badly and went to the hospital for x-ray's, everything came back good, minus the bruises on my chest. Car is totaled, driver is fine, im bruised up and i lost my chatter box. All in all im happy to be ok and working out a way to get in touch with the driver to make sure hes taking it all ok.
Hoping for a speedy recovery, i feel like shit but its all aches in my chest.
