hey there. I am looking for a car for autox, and after looking at e30 bimmers and ae86 corollas, I think that I want a 240sx, partly because I have always liked them, and partly because they are so cheap. my question is this: if I get a s13 w/ around 170K miles, and use it for autox and maybe driving a day or two a week, how much is going to go wrong with that many miles. Since its main purpose is an autox car, I want to keep maintenance fairly cheap so i can focus on mods. I hope to soon be part of the 240 community. thanks.
i would try to find a lower mileage one or just do an engine swap(prefrebly rb)

ahh can we say worn out and sloppy suspension.. seriusly though dude.. those bushing are going to be shot to all hell.. and the shocks and springs might not like the back and forth of auto-x.. now if you plan on replacing all of them ( with aftermarket or new stock.. depending on what class you wana run) then you should be fine.. the biggest thing is tires for sure though.. trust me i have a stock 98 ( except for my intake which puts me in sts) and i hang if not beat most people in my class.. all about driver and good suspension/tire/settings...

you can swap in an SR motor and run in street mod. An RB is not the right choice for autocross. One, it's too big, sticks out past the front axle too much. the other reason is that you have to change the cross member to get it to fit. That's a big no no in scca autocross. That will put you in a mod class that you don't want to be in.
If you're not going to completely go through the car changing all the bushings and anything else to be a dedicated autocross car then look for a nice car that isn't worn out. Maybe even an S14 instead of an S13. look for an SE model since their 5 lugs will give you a lot more wheel choices.

i'm in much of the same position as you. looking to get an s14 for ax, but the ones in moderate condition are always SO expensive (5k and up is expensive for me). Hopefully i can work enough this summer to get the car by the end oh well. Heh. It's funny how I get so excited thinking about what i want to do to the car when i don't even have it. :: keeps hoping ::
yeah.. i can hang with alot more modded cars with my car then some of the other 240's around here in utah.. mainly because my car was and is taken car of... still trust me the s-14 is worth the cash for how much more stiff it is... but anyways s13autox what class are you looking to run in.. that will help us give you advice in which mods to get...

My opinion (could be totally wrong). I have been campaigning a 1993 240sx Se for two years now in STS class. I just replace all wheel bearings, brake rotors, brake pads hawk hps plus, Brake lines, Tension rod bushings, all ball joints, AGX struts, Eibach pro kit springs, new strut top bushing and suspension tec. sway bars, running 205/50/15 falken azenis. Rest of the car is stock, this setup has been very sucessful in STS (class requires running street tires, cheaper than r compound) against local and surrounding regions. It seem to be even better as I become a better driver.
I suggest buying a rule book, and review the classes pick one and run it fer several years. Try staying out of the mod class this will save you money. Maybe find a friend to help show you the ropes of autocross. Then share what you learn with other people on the board, autocross setups arent published much for the 240sx. Do not get discouraged, it takes time to learn autocross, ask questions.
