AutoX first or straight to Road Race?

hey everyone, I wanted to start practicing for some major Road Racing. Since the nearest track is like a 2 hour drive I figured maybe i should try and get into some local AutoX events and practice there first. Kinda looks like AutoX is a mini Road Racing course.

What do you guys think? Should I try out AutoX first or go straight to road racing? or are they completely different?

also would a set of front/back strut bars be enough(i have stock brakes/suspension)? It always good to practice with a worse setup first right?

Thanks,
Tomek

2 things

1) autoxing will teach you excellent low speed car control as well as the basic for road racing (looking ahead, learning the proper racing line, weight transferm, braking points, etc.)

2) when you autox with a stock (or close to stock) car you really see how well you are improving....but when you autox on a modified car, the modifications actually hide your inabilities....once you reach a certain point the mods will no longer be able to cover for you and you'll find it much harder to improve your skills

so yes, i'd definitely recommend you autox for a while and on a stock car as well

its a great idea to keep things stock, maybe just better brake pads.....not the bottom of the line..jusst so you knwo they will last and help protect the investment under you.

i dont see Auto-x as a must for a starting point there are no instructors to teach you along the way, if you do a road race event with the right group you will get lots of instruction which in the end will be "much-mo-betta" than any solo time anywhere. Instructors teach you about braking points, turn-in's, car setup and safety, even how to take the perfect line...for your setup and driving style. road racing will be more expensive, but more worth it and WAY more fun in the end...8 20min track sessions against 8 1.5min sessions in a parking lot.......i think that should be enough for ya right there.

while i agree that road racing will provide more extensive instruction and imo more fun you can still learn a great deal of basics from the instructors at autox, you just have to find the right one in your region

not sure where you're road racing for 8 20 minute sessions or autoxing for 8 1.5 minute sessions but i wanna go there lol

i've only been to road racing events with 4 30 minute sessions and 4 30 minute classroom sessions each day and at autox our courses are never more than 50 seconds (we need bigger parking lots)

it depends onwhat event you do and when, i did 8 25min sessions in 2 days at VIR...on a 4.3 mile course, costs a bit, but the instruction was great and the track was well worth it. PCA (Porsche Club of America) does some pretty good drivers education things also, but they go at weird times, with them you can get the same number of sessions, but each is like 40min or more.

Do any of you know where i can get info for lessons or where i can go to, to get some track time. I would like to get into some kind of road racing, but i just dont want to jump into it, would want to get to know the finer points of racing a car through a track. So any info on how i could get instructed and how much that would cost would be great thx.

instruction directly involves track time.....wheel to wheel requires getting race license which takes quite a bit of time

www.nasaproracing.com

www.mazdadrivers.com

www.pca.org

www.audiclubna.org

www.skipbarber.com

www.bondurant.com

just do a google search for "Racing school" or HPDE...etc.

I've got another idea for you, circle track. You'll have to have a car that you can use for racing only, and a way to get it to the track, but after you get over those hurdles it's low price. Most circle tracks, dirt or asphault have a Pure 4, or similiar class under a different name. The cars are stock, no mods at all, street tires, usually 60 series min. profile. And I do mean stock, so that keeps expense low. You're out there with 30 other cars sometimes, fun like you'll never get on the highway(and stay out of jail). You'll learn car control, judging lines, how to pass other drivers, and get a PHD. in accident avoidance.

circle track wont teach you nearly teh same technique you learn on any road course or auto X......it will howver teach you how to carry speed through a broad turn and keep momentum up. Road course is my opinion is by far the most exhilerating experience out of the three options.

If there was a road course near me I would road race, I use what i've got. There's a lot more circle tracks than there are road courses and most of them race every week. Matter of fact i've raced 2 tracks in one night. Any form of racing is better than none at all, i'm just showing another option.
