KA24DE or SR20DET Components Swap

Hello,

This is not the question about which engine is better or such here. This is more of the question of the part exchangability since I am looking to have AC included in the 1992 240SX Fastback that I picked up this week and planning to do the engine overhaul and transmission replacement.

I have been reading the forums and there are lot of debate about the engine between both. I can understand the factors between both, but what I am more interested is the part exchangability between both engines when it comes to the AC unit. That one, I do not see it addressed anywhere in the forum, so I figures I ask here about this. Plus, I understand if I go SR20DET route, there is electricical wiring work to do as stated in the forum. But what about AC part and power steering? Reason I asked about this is that I bought it for my wife to drive, and since it got blown motor and busted transmission, it calls for a replacement of both to have it back into running form. Now, the transmission is to be automatic, considering she does not like manual, and I am fine with that.

What I more interested in having little power over the KA24DE, but I am more interested in fuel economy as well. There are pros and cons between both, since lot of people says that KA24DE is truck motor and seems underpowered in the 240SX itself. I am not looking to boost it to 250 or beyond, but more of interested in fuel economy along with dependability and reliability for long life. I mean, 240SX got the looks for the fastback which is timeless and I like it that way. So I want to maintain some originality and keep the costs low for now, due to very tight budget. So, back to that question, what modifications or such do I have to do if I go for SR20DET that is pulled from Infiniti G20 and put it in the 240SX itself, while having the AC option included. I mean, I am in the South, and my wife is in Houston for now, and I want to get it done so I can drop it off for her to use.

So, helpful information would be very appreciated, since I am planning to do the engine overhaul myself with my brother to have it done in a week or so to have it running. If there is too much modifications to be done with SR20DET due to AC and few others, then I will go with KA24DE, but I would appreciate some pointers and information needed to boost the fuel mileage economy to 30 to 38s per gallon if possible. That means like intake, exhaust or such to make it possible while under budget of $900 if possible. Thanks!

First question...you said you are pulling the SR20DET out of a G20? Was a SR20DET swapped in there previously? If not, then you will be pulling a SR20DE out of that G20, just want to clear that up. As for your other questions, I am not 100% sure. I do know there are quite a few Nissan dealers in the States that you can order SR parts from.

Whether it's DET or DE, you will still have a few other issues getting that FWD motor to go in a RWD car. I know it's been done, but I've read tnat it's a little more involved than taking a RWD SR and putting it in there.

It is originally have KA24DE motor in it in the first place. Just it is totally shot as far I can see when I picked it up from them, with hole in the engine block. Not sure how he managed to do that in the first place.

yes, but like rlong said, will you be taking the sr out of a g20? or not?

and also are you planning on accomplishing all this with a budget of 900? motor, intake, exhaust?

If it is truely the stock SR that is still in the G20, I would just stay with the KA that's already in the car, and rebuild it. Swapping in the SR20DE, you are going to lose HP and torque.

Swap

Hello,

I was thinking of having it pulled out of the G20 itself to put in there. But from some PMs I have received, I will go with the KA24De afterall. I just like to have it set for long term use, but I would be more interested in about boosting the mileage on the car itself.

Plus a friend next door happens to have couple of KA24DE engines laying around so he is giving me those to rebuild it to have it running. He runs a junkyard down here in Florida.

I've seen well maintained KAs run well over 200,000 miles, so I don't think you will have a problem.
