This thread is packed full of great info. I still have a question.
My 240 is an auto with a pretty much shot tranny( only 2 gears). I want to try and do the SR20 swap. What I wanna know is: Will I have to buy a new tranny that's specially for the SR, or will a manual tranny out of a KA 240 bolt up to the SR motor?
Wow so much info its great thx.. I wish for wiring up all these motors we had a step by step guide with pictures..... If someone can post that be great its still kind confussing on what wires to keep from KA motor then where they go!!!
well first of all if u buy an sr20 swap it usually 90% of the times comes with the tranny...if i were you id buy a front clip...it will have everything u need to swap it from auto to 5 speed......
and to a comment made previously before i dont rememeber who it was...its not that cheaper sending it to the westcoast instead of the east....i see people in the west coast paying 2400 for a s13 redtop motoset....i can get that for under 2200 complete with maf and igniter chip plus some extras like smic...sometimes smic piping.....and a s14 vvti front clip for 3100.....so it all depends where u go and who u know.....
just save all that build money! or atleast find your self a dohc motor... thats a cheap engine to find, plus a bit more potential to your single cam...
if i got a redtop or blacktop sr20det and put minimum upgrades in it around how fast could it go and would it be good enough for drifting ( power wize cause i know drifting isnt all about the power its about the body, suspension so-on ) but yeh how fast would it go and would it be good enough for drifting ( high speed )

power fom the sr20dets is good enough to drift. you dont need a lot of power to drift.
I beg to differ. Power IS important. BUT, large amounts of power are not required to drift. extra power makes things more fun, and easier to a certian extent. I drifted with my stock ka twin cam for over a year. But that was on stock wheels and tire sizes. The amount of power you SHOULD have is proportional to the amout of grip available from your tires. You cant enjoy real track drifting with 245 tires on a stock ka. but you also dont need 400hp do spin them either. As a general rule of thumb, if your tire size(width in mm) and whp number are around the same it will make a good combination for 2nd gear drifting.
ex:
205 rear tire size > 205hp
245 rear tire size > 245hp
285 rear tire size > 285hp
Like i said this is just a general rule of thumb. You can drift with less, or you can drift with more. but this ballpark figure offers a good balance of power and grip. for the later part of last season i had 285whp and 205tires = bouncing off the limiter all day long and lack of slide speed.
okay, i just bought a 1996 240sx. its got about 118 miles on the stock ka motor. im wanting to do a swap but at the same time i do that i want to switch the transmission to standard cuz i bought a fuckin auto any one know if this is a waste of time and money? should i just sell this car and try to find one already standard? and to be honest i dont have much money. any ideas as to what i should do?
i also scored a sponsor so i can get some discounts but i dunno if i should put all this money into this car or just sell it and buy another one
There's one swap you forgot there, the VH45de. Its actually been done quite a few times, freakin amazing sound, just youtube 450sx or vh45de 240sx swap or that stuff n ull see it.
i'm new to the 240 community (although have wanted for awhile) and have decided to save up for one, this helped me know more about the engines and confirmed my sr20 decision
Hmmmm...
i was thinking of either a RB swap from the ka24de
instead of doing what everone else does with the sr20
buuuut right now i have an short ram intake in and i'm not
sure exactly what i wanna do yet..hmmm
I do have to cash needed to buy these (Thank you credit rating and working like an idiot for the past 5 years!!)
Maybe my limit is about $20K at least, give or take a grand or two.
I figured that if I just buy a Tomei Derive-1 engine (Derive-2 is out of my reach), which has everything I need, then it would amount to about the same if I had swapped in a RB25 and completely rebuilt it.
So my question is, would it be wise to buy this or just get a RB25 and just rebuild it.
I have experience in this field already, used to own a Datsun 240. Re-did the engine and everything...then I had a accident and now it's in car heaven.
Rainy day, driving down the highway (fast)...hit a pothole, car hit the barrier and then rolled down the hill side (Thank you 5-point harness and roll cage!!!), and it died that day. I only broke my left arm and wrist, and pulled a leg muscle. Engine was partially wrecked due to the frame caveing in on it.
Uhh, that engine is a waste of money. You can build an SR so much better if so much better with that kind of money even if you aren't doing the work yourself. Also, what kind of power are you looking for?

As much as I can, I need the car for my job. I just got promoted, and I want to drive in style. Style and speed is my main issue.
What if I put more money in and get the Tomei Derive-1 RB25?
I basically want something that I can put in myself quickly I guess. If I was to rebuild the a SR20 from the ground up, it could be that same as my Datsun 240 engine. It took almost 4 months. 1 month to get the engine, then the other 3 months with spare time to install pistons and all the goody stuff that makes a car go vroom
I've worked on cars for a long time, odd for a girl though, but a long time indeed.
I have all the equipment I need, it's just that I'd like to get a fast set-up which I can install within a few weeks to a month at best.
Right now, I'm just running off my modded KA, just a few simple mods to increase acceleration and to punch out a few HP.
It's just too damn expensive for what you're getting. Your basically paying that much for the labor and the brand name. Does that website say what kind of numbers that thing will put out?

I don't have to worry about labor actually.
I still have my equipment I have from when I was tuning out my Datsun.
I'm pretty good at taking a engine out and sticking it back in; done it a few times with my Datsun before it died that day.
The Derive that I'm looking at is rated at about, 360ps or close to 356 HP if my math is right; revving at 6500rpm.
