Haha, we'll see. This is my first time trying a cage. I'm borrowing some ideas from Offbeat Garage as far as the floor mount plates are concerned. The cage itself will be all my doing.

I should mention material size etc.

The cage itself will all be 1.5" x .120 wall DOM.

The mount plates are all 12G steel. I was going to do 11G because it would match the DOM thickness, but bending 11G without a press is a pain in the butt.(fyi I'm using a vise and hammer )

Start of the rear, then how it is now with the plates for cage. These plates will land the down bars for the main hoop, and a bar between the towers so I dont have to run a strut bar.

Well, the main hoop plates and the rear plates are welded in. I have learned 2 things today.

1 - I am NOT as young as I used to be. Whoever said building a racecar was fun, never welded this crap before. I can only imagine how much fun the cage will be.

2 - It is not a fast process by any means. These rear plates took me about 5 hours to build, shape, and weld(not to mention welding them in). I know my way around a welder and metal working tools.... I figured this would have been something like 2 hours. Boy was I wrong!

Looking like tomorrow I can start bending some tube. I am hopefully going to pick up a new compressor in the morning. We'll see how it plays out.

Enough rambling! Pictures. I only took 2 because they look the same on either side...

Well, the family and I spent most of the day having fun. I did get a new compressor that is MUCH quieter than my old one. It's only a 20 gallon, but my main concern was getting something with an oiled pump for noise reduction. It recovers well from an air dump or high cfm tool.

I also bent my first main hoop. It was a little too wide, but I have a good idea how to make the next one.

Who knows? I gave up for tonight.

I did some baseline bend checking to find out what the deal was with main hoop 1. Turns out on the first die pin hole, the degree wheel is off about 1° and the second hole (needed to go past 55°) is off 2°. They require you to go 1°/2° past your desired bend(after springback). So keeping that in mind I took another stab at the main hoop this morning.

I should have done this checking yesterday before diving in clueless. Lesson learned!

Main hoop attempt 2 fits nicely.

This is post bending, pre trimming to fit.

Rear down bars are done. 83° notch at the top and an angle at the bottom. I was surprised they fit this well.

Have you decided your end goal for the car yet? Obviously, the more complete the car becomes, the more tedious the build will be.

Well, its being built to NASA/FD. My goal is mostly track days and some day actual events with NASA. I'm not a big drifter, but building it to comply "just in case" it has to be sold.

I have another build on here for my hatch that I finally got to a point where I can run it on track this year. It made me realize how much I wanted more protection. If you look at any serious impact in a 240(insert sad google images...lol), they fold like a taco. Track speeds will make the car look like that, or worse.

The main reason for this build is protection. Of course, also, because I love coupes more. Haha

The Japanese had to compromise somewhere; chassis strength was it.

I suppose, with it being a "track" build, the build should go fairly quickly. No need for carpet. :-)

My hatch still has carpet. I may put some in, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Hahah.

The side bars are in. These things kicked my butt. Lots of measuring, trimming, measuring some more, and trimming some more.

I also had to repair the floor a little on the passenger side. All should be good now.

The fit is again better than I expected.

Hoping to get the double diagonal, top front cross bar, and roof bars in yet this weekend.

The harness bars and door bars will have to wait until I get the seats mounted.

I need dry ice to get this sound deadening off. Scraping it off sucks.

Wow I'm really impressed by the progress. It's really cool to see the cage being built piece by piece. Good job and keep up the good work.

Thanks, it's going to slow down a bit now. I need to decide how I'm going to eliminate the catalytic converter hump and redo the floor. I need to finish this before I can mount seats. Seats need to be mounted so I know the harness bars will give me proper harness angle.

I can still do the windshield bar and double diagonals in the main hoop. Anything more than these two items will make removing the sound deadening a pain.

Trying to find dry ice for the sound deadening removal.

Well, I need to get a few things figured out, but I should have more progress soon. I should also be able to reveal my plans for it's heart in the next few weeks.

Another 120' of DOM should be here early this week. No, I'm not actually going to use ALL of that in the coupe. I want to have it on hand(possibly doing a 4pt in the hatch instead of the harness bar I have in it).
