DIY: Window regulator repair 5$

Okay so if your window regulator is broken and its not the motor, it will be the goddamn cable setup. This is a 5$ fix that takes a little time becuase its a lot of small shit. I will post as many pics as possible, some came out bad but I will do my best to describe everything. My uncle and I did this in about 3 hours, but we B.S. ed alot too so. I suggest 2 people.

Click the thumbnails for large pics. It will be directions, then pics, directions then pics etc FYI.
Tools needed:
10 MM
12MM sockets
Phillips head screw driver
flat head screw driver
Cable cutters
Vice Grips(or whatever)
Bike cables
Hammer
Beer.
You will need to go to Wal Mart or any bike store(or steal it off your familys bike) and buy these for 5$. They are bike cables by Bell(just the ones I used)
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
Okay lets get started. First remove your door, there will be 2 (at least on mine) screws, one in the door handle/window control, one on the far right of the door. Also pop out the door lock/handle surrounder.
[IMG][/IMG]
After you have the screws and the lock plastic surrounder off pop the door off and you will have to unplug the window switch. I forgot to take a pic before so I just pluged it in to show you what needs to be unplugged. after that you can put the door panel somewhere safe.
[IMG][/IMG]

Next take out the 4 bolts that hold the regulator piece in place, these will be 12mm. There will be 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom
[IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

Next get pissed because getting the window out will take some finess. Try to pull from the top and have a friend push from the bottom. This will take some common sense to get out, if you cant get it out stop reading and dont try to do this. I ran into a problem of the top 2 bolts(that you took the nuts off of) getting caught in their slots, so I pushed the bottom in and used a screw driver to gently pry the top screws out of their slots. LayNLow Suggest removing the window from the regulator inside the door for easy removal, just dont lose those bolts!
[IMG][/IMG]
Now that the window is out take out the regulator from the window(put the window somewhere safe and soft please). It will be 4 10MM bolts and 3 screws for the motor. or you can take out the motor later(I cover that next).
[IMG][/IMG]
Okay now that the regulator is free get somewhere comfy because this is the long tedious part.
Take out the motor with the 3 screws and the 3 10 mm bolts holding the gear cover on(The gear cover has tabs through the middle so it wont come off but you need to losen it.)
[IMG][/IMG]
Next take the cables(IN my packet there were several). PAY ATTENTION HERE. You will need the LONG cable that has the smaller diamater flat circle on one end(the other end will have a ball on it). There are 2 cables that have bigger circles, these are too big to use, so get the smalle one. Clip off the BALL END(with the cable cutters) and take off the black plastic/ rubber whatever stuff from the cable so it looks like this.
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
Now set that aside and pick up the regulator(which should have only 1 gear on it) and gently pry up the edges that cover that gear where the bolts were.
Once you have done that take out the cable that will be set into the top of the little pully with a circle end(like the ones on the cables you bought). Once that is out your into the PITA part. IT should look like this.
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
Now that the shitty cable is out take the new and old cable and measure them(stretch the shitty one out first) then cut the new cable leaving a bit of extra just in case you mess up. I dont have a pic of this, if you need it your dumb.
Now have a treat.

Okay back to work. Okay my cable that was still good(the one that is threaded through the center of the pully, which you will see once you get to this point) needed to be tightened by taking a flat head screw driver and pushing it CLOCKWISE(unless im retarded, but it is 1:30 a.m.) tighten it untill the slider on the top(if the pully is closer to you which it should be) is all the way(or about 97% of the way) to the right. This cable should be on the bottom half of the pully!! Then clamp it down like so with vice grips(or whatever)
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
After that is all good take the bike cable and put it in the same hole that you took the crappy cable out of, now if you cant see the hole for it on the top side of the pully loosen up the clamps and gently rotate it untill you find the hole. Once you find it put the new cable in, but re tighten the one that you loosened by using the same method as before(this will take some time as it likes to pop out and be a bitch). This new cable should be on the TOP half of the pully!! Pull it tight and send it through the little whiteish pully on the left and then to the bolt on the slider on top(where the other cable is connected, youll see it once your here). PULL THE CABLE TIGHT TIGHT and wrap it around the bolt once or so, then tighten the bolt back down(10 MM). The last pic expalins it a little bit and shows where the bolt is. I realize the last 2 pics sort of contradict each other because of the location of the sliding piece but it was just to show you where to put the cable. The slider should be all the way over to the right.

[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
Now that its all done and TIGHT, GENTLY hammer(or whatever u need to do) the tabs on the gear back down and straight. then bolt eveything back up and install it back in the car. The windows is a SOB to get back in(well sometimes, other times it just slides in) or follow LayNLow's advice to put it together once its back inside the door, again just dont drop the bolts!. I did a few test runs before I put the door panel back on, and after a few the new cable was perfect but my damn gear was bent(which we suspected before we did it, but figured for 5$ it was worth a try) and it caused the cables to overlap and tangle. So I will need a new on, but if just your cables are bad then this should fix it. GL ALL. If anyone notices I forgot anything please feel free to add. And for the cable that was good on mine and may be broke on yours, just fix it as needed.

damn dude, great write up! but just a little too late for me.
my last regulator had a screwed up cable, so i just went to the junkyard and got one.
another tip for taking out/putting the window back in, is to unscrew the glass from the regulator by the 4 bolts on the slider things, and take the window out, then take out the 4 bolts holding the regulator in and take it out. then to put it in put the regulator in first, bolt it down, then put the window in and bolt it to the regulator.
by the time i went from having a non working window, to a working one, i mastered taking out the window! but in the end i got a free window motor from all of this.
when i got the window regulator from the junkyard, i had a helluva time getting it out because i didnt bring a 10mm wrench or small socket/ratchet with me to take the window out. so i had to improvise and pry the door away from the regulator. i was suprised the window held up to the pressure i was putting on it with my prybar.

yeah, i spent like 10 mins trying to get it back into the door in one piece like the first time when i realized that i needed a new regulator(i had taken it out to put the window motor in) so my door was all scratched up from trying to get thoes damn bolts past the inside of the door.

add it to your write up if you wish.

Just wondering, is this the same as an s14? Because my window wont roll up or down, it did the first 3 days after i bought the car but after that it stopped and its about 1inch away from being all the way up. Do you guys think this is the motor or the regulator?

is it doesnt make any noise(like the motor not running or gears not moving) then its the motor..mine madea crunch noise and would still spin but the cables would not tigghten properly thus the DIY..as for if this is the same as the s14 I have no idea but I would assume its basically the same system. Take off your door and have a look inside. ohh and Im also pretty sure its your motor because if your cables were slipping your window would be in the bottom cuzz the window falls. or you have a blown fuse.

Hahha Im sorry... *ahem ok..
It is really hard to take out the Window Assembly. The 2 bolts on top are stopping me from sliding the Window Assembly out.

then take them out.
have you tried to take the glass out first then the regulator? that is a hell of a lot easier than trying to take both out at the same time.

you will have to take out 6 bolts. 2 holding the glass to the regulator, and 2 that are the window stops. check out the pictures from the OP for locations.
getting it out without dropping the window is a bitch. i had to do that with mine too, but i cant remember what i did. i know some prying and pulling was required to get room for that stud to clear.
