The answer will almost always be yes. I get asked this mostly when small mods are made to a ka or sr, or if they have a stock ka or stock sr.

Today I tuned a ka24de with stock injectors, cp 9:1 pistons and BC 264 cams, an intake, and 3" exhaust with testpipe and header.

He was using 89 pump gas.

The blue line is with stock mapping and the red line is when I was done.

Considering building the engine with cams and pistons (which are lower compression than stock with hopes of turboing some day) and the full exhaust was not cheap the performance gains on the stock tune could not have been much at all.

For around $500~ for the chipping/dyno/tuning it tied everything together.
There is a 30-40 hp gain almost everywhere and around 40 ft/lb of tq everywhere.

that engine would love a high flow intake manifold, cam adjustment, and about 12.8:1 compression.
dont worry i got love for the all motor guys. Them boys bleed and sweat for every hp gain they squeeze out. Funnest motor i ever built was a 2002 honda s2k engine. toda cams, 13.2:1 compression, ITB's and a 11k redline. veery fun to drive.

I'm not an expert, but isn't 118hp abnormally low for a mostly stock KA?

I mean I made 145hp and 150tq on my 184k mile KA in my old 240, and all that had was a cone filter, hotshot header, and 2.5'' exhaust out of a local united muffler.... and all the tuning I did was to adjust the base timing. So to me, you gained what looks a lot more like 7hp.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I feel like that motor had obvious problems either in cam timing, or ignition timing to make only 118hp to start with, and then end up with really not much more HP than can be made with straight bolt ons when properly installed.

Depends on what kind of dyno was used and elevation.
Note also he has Lower than stock C/R pistons.
And EVERY motor will make different part regardless if it has the same exact parts on it.
Also S13 's have a Stock C/R of 9.2:1 not 9.5:1 so essentially he could only have 8.7:1 C/R
Also depends on the HG he usd. Many factors that play a part in this.

Very VERY good gains from that of a Stock tune. Also EVERYBODY knows how shitty those BC cams are timed. If they were just dropped in then there's probably another 10+ easy more to get out of that.

The view counters are fucked up.

110whp before tune....thats wow. But whats more wow is the gain

dd and md are known to be really close in their readings and this really proves it! Thanks for posting it kid!

I believe I know where they got their extra 10bl ft from at pk tq, and if my graph and this graph had afr it would show it all.....
I know the owner of the car did not intend on running anything but mid grade in this setup so I added just a touch more fuel in the pk tq area as ka's to tend to like to detenate there at high load sometimes.

All in all this is a great comparison of how close a properly tuned engine will be if both of means of tuning are not ghetto and good dynos are used and if a compitent tuner did the tuning.
I am however thinking that the cams were most likely not worth the money.

I would not hesitate to say the Cams fucked the numbers. EVERYONE that has EVER put them in the motor and checked the degreeing on them will off the bat say that they sucked and had they known would have bought something else...

Also those are some good numbers for 89 Oct. might I add.
I'm pretty sure 92+ would pull out a bit more lb ft. trq every where

yea, it took months after he installed them before the car ran well enough for me to tune him. The first time he showed up at the dyno I sent him back home because his car ran so bad and I told him his mods would not have caused his car to run that bad and he needed to figure his problem out. I think he has gears, or had them backwords but I dont know for sure if he got them right though.

The car does feel great for what it is though. For how stock it looks under the hood it would be a great auto-x cheater.......
