CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. -- One person was killed in a crash in Citrus Heights Thursday morning, and authorities said street racing was involved.
The crash happened near the intersection of Auburn Boulevard and Van Maren Lane.
A white Mustang ended up wrapped around a tree and the vehicle was nearly split in half by the violent impact.
Authorities said the driver of the Mustang was involved in a street race with the driver of a red Honda at speeds of up to 90 mph, before the Mustang skidded out of control and into the tree.
The driver of the Mustang, identified as 25-year-old Steve Skattebo, was killed. A passenger in the Mustang, identifies as 17-year-old Matthew Monterio, Skattebo's step-brother,was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center with serious injuries.
A witness helped comfort the injured passenger until emergency crews arrived.
"We just held him, kept him as calm as possible. There was definitely a lot of injuries ... there was blood everywhere. We just kind of tried to keep the passenger as calm as possible," witness Rachel Matthews said.
Authorities said the driver of the red Honda, 22-year-old Jason Golson, initially fled the scene but then returned and stood in the crowd before leaving again. He was later arrested on second-degree murder charges.
Investigators said Golson's Honda had been modified for street racing.

I go to street races down here and its pretty insane. The road is pretty big but still dangerous and 2 cars take 1 1/2 lane (including opposite side) and they race down the road while previous racers come back to the start. What Im saying is they are about inches away! and one of these days a head on collision is going to happen.
I hate people (kids) think just because they have their lisence they think they are badasses and skilled. Then they end up getting owned by a tree or something. They should first learn to get the feel of the car and its limits before "showing" off.

I watched the news and i think they said the guy who was killed had hella tickets from the past for his mustang and racing. I think he also had a suspended license also. Im not 100% sure i can't remember
stupid street racers.
maybe i'm being an ass, but if you die street racing, i.e. doing something insanely stupid, it does suck, and it's sad, but you deserve it.

Street racing is very dangerous, and someone needs to pay but the 2nd degree murder charge does not fit the crime. There are certain elements which qualify a murder charge.
Where I lived a few years ago was right on a corner on the side of a 6 lane. Me and my old lady were watching American pie 2, anyways all the sudden we heard a loud ass crash outside so we go out. Well accross teh street is an Fc almost on the porch of the house sitting there and in the middle of the road is some dude just laying in the turning lane not moving. We were the 1st ones there (since I lived rght accross the street) but I guess teh people in the house called the cops already. Apparently he was racing some dude in a Mustang and the road was damp so he went accross 3 lanes of traffic hit the curb which actually caused the door on his rx7 to come open and since he wasnt wearing his seatbelt he flew out of the car, up in the air and down on his head. The car was at least 50 yards away from where he was laying. ANYWHO he died right there before the paramedics got there. then some people who apparently knew him pulled up to me and asked hey is that Matt Boulard? I said yeah,, he's dead. Dude in the Mustang went to jail for 2 weekends and thats all. My Gf didnt take it too well, I mean seeing someone dead that is. So case in point Street racing is fucking STUPID but we all knew that.
You wouldnt think East Tn would be bad for street racing but it seems like once a month theres an incident meaning theres alot of dumb asses around here.
yea i live in TN outside of memphis. aside from the local ricer-runners, theres really no street racing aside from the red-necks in there 4x4's every now and then. everytime something like this happens, it just makes it harder on us, the ones who dont street race. it just gives the cops more reason to pull us over all the time.
