I use my 240sx as a DD.
I took the lady out to eat, everything was fine.
Stopped at Salvo on the way home to maybe find some salvo treasures (NO luck all they had was overpriced used furniture and grandma clothing that day).
Got in the 240 to drive from salvation army to home, and the car started up fine as usual, then died. Literally died after maybe 15 revolutions of being on.
Car Background:
-89 240sx KA24E
-Timing chain has maybe 3k on her.
-Cam pulley is 1k new.
-All fluid levels always at level
-New spark plugs
-Dist Cap is 800mi. new
Well, I always plan for the 240 to break, so my trunk is literally a tool arsenal.
In the salvation army parking lot,
1. I bust out my flashlight (it's nighttime) and check all kick panel and engine bay fuses. All ok.
2. Whipped out a screwdriver and opened up the fuel lines. Both squirted fuel.
3. Whipped out my sockets and tested spark while grounding the plug on the chassis. Spark A-OK.
4. Checked injector connectors, coolant sensor connectors and miscellaneous connectors. All connected and seem to be OK.
5. Unplugged MAF and tried starting her up. Nothing.
6. Don't know if it would make a difference but I tried unplugging the coolant temp sensor then starting it up. Nothing.
7. Took off the valve cover and checked the timing chain (one time the chain snapped on me). Chain was fine.
IMPORTANT POINTS
Now here's the deal. I am pretty good at listening, and know how normal sounding turning over sounds like. Everything sounds normal. No abnormal sounds while turning over, no low battery.
The car sounds like it gets a fire in here and there, just enough to get me a little excited every time. It might have a combustion or three when I first attempt to start the vehicle, then if I keep attempting to turn over all I get is the sound of turning over and no start up.
I'm trying to think of what this could be, and why the car decided to just die after it already ran fine and started fine and then died instantly with no weird sounds.
I already ruled out cap and rotor, because If those went out I believe that would be a little more progressive and not so sudden right? The cap is new.
Listen for the fuel pump when the ignition is on. If you do not hear a buzzing sound in the trunk, with that on (no start, just ignition) than that's the problem.
I had a pump that would pump fine when it was cold, but after 2-3 min of driving it would stop pumping. If I let it cool off for a few minutes it started right back up.
Issue is that as long as I've had the car, when it ran fine everytime- even with the trunk carpet removed and my ear by the pump I can't hear it. And that's when I knew it worked. LOL. I mean, in AC ignition position it pumps fuel as mentioned in the first post. I'm just dumbfounded as of now.
im with the fuel pump on this one cuz i just had this problem and when i cheked the fuel line to see if it was pumpin fuel it filled the glass every time but when i cranked her up it would just spin cum to find out the fuel pump was clogged and had lost pressure ....i swapped it out with a walboro255 and its been a week and i havent had a problem since it also cleared up a idle issue i had
You should defiantly hear the pump with your head in the trunk. I can hear mine buzzing standing behind the car with it running. If you can, check fuel pressure.
Bad new bears, replaced fuel pump. No go. Any other ideas? I mean what would cause a car to suddenly shut off after a regular start up? ECU? Possibly the timing chain skipped a few teeth? Just throwing some ideas out there.
Hmm. Have you checked fuses? Check the ECU fuse. I blew and ECU fuse once (which somehow took the ECU with it) and it made the fuel pump stay on. When I turned the key, the pump would start and it would just keep pumping.
The SOHC's will run with 1 tooth retarded (it actually makes decent power up top too), but you could have jumped more.
Have you done a compression test yet? That would rule out the bent valves or jumped timing.

When you go into the Beginner Forum, right about all the titles you can go into (a thread), you can see in the left "Post New Thread". There you'll be able to make your own.
Don't worry about it. Just keep the thread going. If he continues to post I'll take care of it. I have a feeling if I clean it up now he won't understand how to make a thread and continue what he's been doing.
Well, I replaced Fuel pump, spark wires, and nothing.
I decided to put the car into TDC and remove the valve cover again. Yep, cam timing was off! I found out the right hand side timing chain guide (non-tensioner side) about broke all the way off! In turn that threw the cam timing off from the crank .
What's weird is that I JUST replaced that SAME guide, that broke a month prior .
I wonder why that same guide keeps breaking? Any ideas?
