Sticking popup headlights? Here's an easy fix!

The right headlight on my car was sticking in the up position after I would turn off the headlights so I decided to look into fixing it (New headlight motors are ~$250 from the dealer and getting a used one only prolongs the inevitable sticking problem)

Anyway, the headlight motors have motor brushes that wear out over time (after 13 years they can definitely wear out)

What I did first was take off the headlight motor knob and cover (circled in red), then bent the brushes so that they touch the motor and added some contact grease. Reassembled everything and now they work just fine!

I'll post better pics tomorrow.

Both of mine are sticking, do you think its a relay or do you think it may be that the brushes need to be reattached?

Try changing the relay first.

Hey all, new member -

My 1990 decided to get its headlights (both) stuck in the up position, after I pulled the flash-to-pass. They popped up, the flashing high beams work fine, but then they refused to go down. The headlight flip button on the dash did nothing, though I think the joker who had the car before me may have futzed with it. Apparently he had it set up to go into sleepy-eye mode by running a toggle switch off the fuse with a line to the switch. I pulled this switch and the lights worked fine, but I had never tested the flash-to-pass previously.

I'm guessing this is a relay, but I'm a nub on my new 240 and am not sure which one I should be checking. Any ideas what could have gone wrong, or perhaps a picture of the relay I should look at?

Thanks for any help...

my popups do this weird shit.
when they are off one is all the way down and the other is sleepy then when i turn them on one is all the way up and the other stays sleepy it moves up and down but always goes back to the sleepy position.

and i tried turning the knob to reset it but it keeps going back

any ideas on the problem?

I have a problem with sticky headlight too. when i hit the swich on the dash i just hear a click. i tried changing the relays in the relay box and it did not do anything to help. However i used a test light to check if i am even getting power to the lights. What i found by doing that is, when i place the test light in the relay the light motors kick on like its trying to put the lights up but they dont move. any suggestions?
