not likely, they both have a ton of pros and cons, and there have been a couple of threads on this in the past.
oh, and there's a reason there's a section for both engines, hint hint.

KA(T) = legal for daily driving
SR = illegal no matter what (but if it's a track car (not daily driver), who gives a damn?)

KA-T

and remember boost is replacement for displacement.

so you will spend much more on a larger turbo and turbo acsessories to equal a lower amount on the turbo for the KA.

also KA-T is legal.
but thats IMHO.

They are both good choice. Which ever you choose in the end i'm sure you will be happy with.
Keep in mind...
KA-T= More Torquy
SR= More Rev Friendly
Keep in mind what your goals are, Drag racing I'd go with the KA, More displacement will help in that department. If your goals are autoX'ing Go with the SR, acceleration is linear in it's powerband.
So just keep this in mind when making your decision..hope you pick one that suits your driving style.

I'd like to partially disagree in one of those statements. (Free country, right!? DONT KILL ME)

In auto-x, you need all the torque you can get to pull through the corners, so a KA-T would be slightly beneficial in that area...?

S14 was totalled

true the ka-t will give you more torque down low, but you'd barely be using the turbo. if you keep the revs high, like your supposed in autox, the sr is far better and cheaper to keep up at that. search next time though.

My ka-t made 310ft/lbs of torque by 3000rpm.... i started that dyno run at 2800rpm..

The ka is a torque monster, if anything its a better auto-x motor than a drag motor. It made 350+ft'lbs of torque from 3500-6000rpm.. with only 16psi boost.

The only advantage an SR has over KA is simplicity. You can buy one ready to go and drop it in, nothing performance wise is better.

KA>SR

A KA-T is just as illegal as an SR.

But get the SR.

This is my opinion on both engines

SR20DET
Pros: Costs less intially
easier to install

Cons: SMOG No way to pass must have $$$
ECU tuning can be a bitch

KA24DET
Pros: Higher out because of displacement
More of a chance of passing smog (easier to take off turbo and manifold to smog car and than change engine on sr20)

Cons: Harder to install, more part required, plus can only run 8psi with stock internals (Head gasket only replaced)

this is the same with both engines as you will have to use a standalone fuel management system to comply with the turbo and added injectors, unless you do a rom tune, but i dotn think anyone has the fuel maps and the addresses for the KA files yet, i havent seen both dumped on the net, only the fuel maps i think

but its well worth it if you have the time to tune the EFi

ok.. I'm not even gonna read the whole thread cause I'm at work.. but here is my $.02..

the KAT is a very good choice for those who want good power, and decreased spool time.. BUT, the SR is designed for turbo, so could be more reliable with a big turbo setup for less money.. I'm personally contemplating buying a fucked KA24DE and building it, slapping a big turbo on it and puttin it in my daily driver.. but, at the same time, I don't know if I shouldn't just go SR20DET cause it's already got a turbo.. the one thing thats pushing me away from SR is $$$$.. ~5k for motorset, IC, exhaust, and the little shit like the tach.. for $250 I can get a busted KA24DE, with tranny.. then go to the scrap yard and get a DE tach.. internals aren't very expensive, esp. considering one of my customers is Diamond Racing Pistons.. there are places all over detroit for building motors.. I could fab up my own manifold for a turbo, and get a T67GTQ for cheap.. then, exhuast, 550s, and an IC and I'll be all set for good, reliable power.. but.. who knows..

I used to be an SR advocate, but there are so few differences that it's just a matter of what you'd be comfortable with yourself.. I have a 240sx/stanza repair manual, so fixing it, or working on it would be easy because I have that tool there for me when I need it.. SRs don't have that.. but oh well.. this is a long ways out..

I just had a chance to drive a ka24det Greddy turbo kit and I have to say i'm definately impressed. For about as much money as an sr swap you get more power and a really torquey setup. But this is considering an stock sr vs stock ka with greddy turbo. So if your one of those people who just throw in an sr but dont mod it to up the boost you might as well save some money and just get a greddy kit. Another factor is some of these old KA motors have alot of miles already.

If your in califonia ( i dont know about other states) the ka det and sr det is illegaly no matter how u look at it.
Your driving style can alway adapt to the way your motor is so it comes down to perference and how much money you want to spend. But from what one of my friends at super street said the sr20 is a better engine for racing because of the head design and the bore and stroke is square. I dont know much about technical engine design but i love my sr it just looks so much cooler then a ka.

But thats just what I think

i spoke to a guy from greddy about their turbo kit for the KA...its obviously only for the 95-up chassis and he told meh that they aren't even CARB Exempt or will be getting a CARB# soon...he told meh maybe sometime in the future they might consider create a kit for the 89-93 chassis but chances are low because these motors are usually in the 100k mi range anyway unless you plan on paying a couple of G's to just rebuild the motor and on top of that pay another 3k for the turbo.so its more than an SR and its still illegal to drive in Cali anyway...i like the clean look of SR anyway...was going for KA-T but my tranny is messed up already and don't wanna bother with that and i'll just drop in an SR myself anyway...i mean with the Smog sh!t you can never reallie get it cleared up anyway...because once a cop pulls your over its OVER! they don't give a sh!t if you say its CARB you need a number no matter what and what if it doesn't pass when you smog it anyway because something else is wrong with your car...then your screwed either way...been there done that ...so you might as well get an SR...less headaches in the long run and your motor is going to have around 50k miles or less while you already might have a 100k mi KA and have to rebuild it to hold the boost...SR is good for 400+whp with stock internals! just my $0.2

Yea thats the same in PA except i can get 94 oct almost everywhere and 100 oct at a few places but that shits at least $4.00 a gallon or more. Also the cops dont harass us about the cars we drive. I just got my car inspected and i asked the guy what the AIV is for and he didnt know what it was and he said if it wasnt there he wouldnt of even known it. I could definitly pass with a KA-T. PA fucking rocks except for its the home of shitty roads.

also something that hasn't been mentioned. with a ka-t, you know your motor, or at least you know it better than an sr. you know how it runs, you know how hard you beat on it. with an sr you never know how the previous owner treated it or what problems are waiting inside for you.
