why would my check engine light go off by itself after a month of being on?

a while ago now my check engine light came on, and i had it checked by 2 people that both said it was a EGR valve problem, i was going to fix it but havent yet, but just yesterday out of the blue the light was no longer staring me in the eye, nothing was done. I want to know does that mean it decided there wasnt really a problem or does it turn itself off after a certain time frame?

someone told me that after starting your car up a certain amount of times it will go away.

It will come back eventually or if you crank your car up real bad.

is the egr valve something that is supposed to be replaced eventually, or did nissan just make really shitty ones?

My light came on, code said egr valve, I reset the ecu and it never came back. The car feels fine.

If the ecu doesn't see the problem for a certain number of run cycles the light will shut itself off.

so with the light now off and the fact that when it was on was EGR valve related, is it possible that maybe it had a blockage and it came good all of a sudden, is it worth getting a computer plugged up to it again and see if the code is stil there?

what IS the problem anyway? I know where the little peice of shit is but don't quite understand what it does. Something about gas recirculation or something...why do we need it and what happens if it goes bad?

The EGR valve is connected to the intake and the exhaust. When it is open it allows exhaust to enter the intake, providing a cleaner running engine. You will usually need it if you want to pass emissions(sometimes cars will pass with malfunctioning valve though) and if it goes bad one of two things will happen: It will not close fullly at idle and the car will run rough or stall or it will not open fully and you will have problems passing the sniffer test. As far as damage to the actual motor, I don't think anything will happen.

yes thats all right which you guys said, i have geard it all now, seen as how mine shows to fail where it didnt make any difference to the driving and running i havent changed it yet but it can make the engine very hard to get along with if it goes out the other way, i am just glad that freaking light is out, i will still replace it but seen as how i dont have to go threw DEQ just yet, it can wait till i get some extra cash and spare time, i just had to buy tires so i have no choice just yet, but yes it's a stupid emission part, i wish we didnt need it all but i guess we all want to breathe fresh air so what doyou do? damn them stinkin parts

The light does in fact go off after a certain number of starts. The light will return eventually as well. you should fix it. prolly isnt hard at all anyway. I reset my ecu 5-6 times when my O2 sensor went out. It would come back on every so often until I finally fixed it.
