I really do give up. After a nice vacation I go back to the shop, and discover a few things. First... ALL the wires to the gauge cluster have been cut... soo I might as well just ditch the gauge cluster and go all aftermarket and have some audio shop make me a nice gauge cluster replacement. sigh... there's $400. Then the clutch line leaks, so i gotta go get another from autozone or something, another pain. The wring is still fucked... im gonne take it to a shop thats $90 an hour. Then the VLSD i have won't bolt into my 240, cuz the driveaxle flanges are different, but that's gonne be a whole other project. I STILL don't have a propshaft, because I'm still looking for a nissan junkyard around here, and I don't wanna spend $350 for a custom one. I'm just waiting around to see if I can get intercooler piping, and while I'm doing that I gotta cut the hole bigger where the SMIC comes through so I can move it forward outta the way of the wheel. Then I gotta cap off the power steering lines somehow, and when it gets to the shop, replace the steering rack boots. YES!
Its ironic... if I was in San Diego, I know exactly where to get all this stuff, but in order to get to San Diego (and move down to school) I need my car to run.
aite today i give a huge thanks to beefcake6681 for comin down to the shop and giving me inspiration. He drove his sil80 an hour to come take a look and to let me check out his wiring. This also leads to another thanks to Poleza for wiring up all this crap (although i shouldn't have let you near the wire cutters). Apparently it looks like this car may be able to start! All i need is intercooler piping, air filter MAFS connector, and lots of luck to make it start. He also let me drive his SR and boy... i really want to make this shit run now! Updates later!
oh no doubt its a good figure lol... that damn thing was fast as hell with 3 full size guys in the car, but considering im shooting for 300-350rwhp is why i said "only" haha
aite... things are lookin good for the first time in this swap! Today i turn the key to the "on" position, and i see that the ecu is getting power, and i can hear the fuel pump turn on. Ignition and fuel are good to go. The engine cranks and the injectors work so.... the engine should run right now. I installed the walbro fuel pump, ordered a nice K&N filter for the MAFS, and all i need to drive now is intercooler piping and a propshaft! Intercooler piping will hopefully come soon, and the propshaft im gonne try to find tomorrow during my breaks from work. Oh shit its almost going to work.... no gauges will be fun though! mb i should get a tach at least...
You might want to hook up some gauges pretty soon. I know a guy in town that had an SR and he also didn't hook up his gauges and found out the hard way.........blew his motor two weeks after the swap. Don't mean to scare you, but gauges are a critical part.

yeah. I have a freind with no gauges... and I think he is crazy. My swap won't start for anything, but I did gauges before I even rremoved my old engine... Autometer EGT, oil pres., Boost, HKS turbo timer, A'Pexi REv/speed, white face kit, glow needles...

hey... how did you hook up the oil pressure gauge? i want to order one from VDO, but I also need to order their sending unit, but I don't know what size threaded unit to order, and I don't really feel like taking out the oil filter and screwing around with the sender. I'd just much rather find out what size thread or what part # to order. I already know the water temp sensor size, but oil pressure I don't know yet. thanks!

Hey i see that you have guages in ur center a/c vent... how you do that??
well... as of right now... it could be anything! it could be 150 it could be 250, i really dunno! anyways today i cleaned up some wiring, got a new clutch line that should work (none of them seem to fit perfectly though, its strange cuz it has the exact same end as the stock one... weird) now i need more brake fluid to fill the system with. Then I took out the stock diff and got everything ready to install the VLSD. Man, taking out the differential and the driveaxles is a real pain! All the damn bolts and the fuckin cotter pins. All i can say is a hammer and an impact wrench is your friend. Then i dropped the diff onto my chest when i took it out, and nearly took out a lung. that was pretty entertaining! Turns out that the VLSD is about 20 lbs lighter than the stock diff! Anyways... tomorrow is the 49ers game and more moving out of my house, then installing the VLSD and hooking up the reverse light, and maybe the hood. I still have the r32 gauges and hood for sale if anyone wants them!
I don't remember what size the pressure unit is. Just go to auto zone, and buy the MEtric/SAE kit for their cheap ghetto gauges, and it will work. Use teflon tape!
THe gauges in the center. You will need: phillips screwdriver, spare plastic, 2 1/16" hole saw, silicone, and a pair of tin snips. Pull out the vents with a flathead. Than release all the little tabs, and pull out the bezel, remove the wheel for closing them off, and pull out the actual housing. now you have the output, with a shroud coming off of it. Cut the shroud in two pieces so you can get it out, than cut platic to size to block off the output. Silicone it in. Than fabricate a platic trim piece for the gauges, and cut three holes in it. Put the gauges in it, (run wiring first) than silicone it in.

ok... things are lookin good today. I got a K&N air filter adapter today and put it on, I got a Autometer 3.5" tach and am in the process of installing it, I'm also in the process of bleeding the clutch (what a pain to do by yourself), the propshaft/driveshaft is in the mail (here by friday they say...), and I'm picking up intercooler piping tomorrow. meaning that this car should be up and running on friday night (i wish). I have friday night and saturday to troubleshoot the car, then i have to load it up with crap and drive it to San Diego to go to school on sunday. Talk about cutting it close! I'm hoping it works!
One small hitch happened and i think another might happen as well. originally the hood wouldn't close all the way, because the skyline radiator is too tall for the 240's front end. Thanks to some quick thinking to the son of the guy who's shop my car is at, I now have a teardrop shaped bump in my hood that if it was smoothed out and painted would actually look pretty cool. But what this means is that i have the sinking feeling that the intercooler piping might not fit over the fan shroud because it might be sitting too high. I really don't know, and I hope my fears are unfounded. Anways, as soon as this car gets finished and I get to san diego, I am going to scan and upload all the pics and do a complete financial report of what this damn thing costs. Oh... I also finally got rid of the front clip carcass, the ka24e engine and the r32 hood at the junkyard (nobody wanted them!). Ahh the shop is finally all clean!
well... my last update until christmas, unless i post some pics, but I probably won't.
Today was supposed to be the big day. Everything is in, hooked up, and ready to go. I got the driveshaft and intercooler piping all on time, and its all in and hooked up. I bought an autometer 3 1/2" 8,000 rpm tach and mounted it on the steering column cover (its perfect there) and hooked it up. I just can't figure out where to hook up the night light to, but thats not important right now.
Now is where the fun starts. I try to crank the motor over, and it spits out a whole bunch of oil onto the floor. Busted oil pan gasket. I take off the oil pan and re-gasket it. Then I crank it over again (without the CAS hooked up). Oil shoots onto the floor again. FUCK. I take a look at where its coming from, and with my handy mirror, I see that only one of the two holes that sit directly above the oil filter is plugged. Normally these are plugged from the factory (even though they are MADE for an oil cooler, thank you nissan), for some reason one was missing its bolt. Its now 4 pm on a sunday afternoon and I am leaving to drive to san diego monday morning at 7 am. The car now sits under a cover out behind the shop until christmas when i get home from school with oil cooler kit in hand, and maybe I'll try starting it then. Maybe I'll get a TEC-2 engine management system too just to get rid of the wiring. I don't know. All I can say is that this is such a fuckin letdown from all the damn work I've put into it.
I know all you out there probably don't want to hear my shit, but this is a warning story for those who want to do the SR swap. Read this, and read it carefully, it will tell you what NOT to do. If you want help on your swap, and will be in the San Diego region, I will be more than willing to help, I'd like to see other people succeed. Catch me on AIM at Rexbo2006, or PM me.
I close this story out of frustration till christmas.
Thanks for all those who supported me during this swap: Poleza, Valentin, RicanNick, and Terence, and above all Charley Markley, whose shop I got to use (do a google search on his name and prepare to be impressed) and the rest of you on these forums.
I am determined to make this run, and be the best. So when it runs, beware.
man that really sucks, you will get a nice break from it (except from thinking about it) and when you get back to it you should be well rested and ready to get it going ... can't wait for updates, good luck with it.
OK, I finally got around to posting some pictures and an update.
The update is that I got a plug to seal up the dumb oil cooler hole on my engine (although i might make an oil cooler outta steel braided lines and an autozone oil cooler). I am also about to order a bunch of autometer gauges. Air/Fuel, Fuel level, Boost/Vacuum, Volts, Oil pressure, Water temp and some sending units. I'm also thinking about getting a Koyo radiator from phase2motortrend unless I can find a better price. So basically when I get home, I gotta hook up all that shit as well as troubleshoot all the mongolian wiring. Chances are, everything will go wrong and it will never drive. Oh well, someday...
Enough of that, here are some pictures (the reason i'm smiling in these is because I hadn't realized just how mongolian it really was):
................man I havent been keeping up with this thead, I read it all tonight and I'm going to have nightmares because of it. keep your chin up though..your going to have the most kick ass swap story of all time.
