Electric fan question (did search)

I have a s13 with a s13 black top. Im using a aftermarket eletric fan. I wanted to know if any one is running there electric fan off of the ac fan harness. In the s13 FSM it says that at 212F the ecu turns on the ac fan to aid in cooling. I just need to know if any one is doing this and if it works. My car is getting the ecu reprogramed at this time so i have no way to test it out. And if it dose work i will wire my car up fo it so its ready to go when the ecu comes in. Thanks

you should have the fan turn on a little before 212F. More like 170F

Agreed, thats way too late to turn on the fan IMO. At that point your already on the road to overheating. Turning on at 170-180 is much better.

I do not want to have a switch on the dash for the fans. Also i dont see how the probs that you stick in the cooling fins could be that acurate. Is there any other thermostat that are able to like screw in and actuall be in the coolant? that seems like it would be the best bet. like drill and tap a hole into the thermostat housing and install one there? I work on gm and they have the fans kick on at 225 thats why i thought that 212 would be fine. Thanks

I bought one of those universal adjustable fan switches with the probe from my local car parts store ($17 plus tax) and hooked the probe up to the radiator inside the aluminum fan shroud i have. It works great, and if you worry about overheating, you can just set the dial to a lower temp, you can make it always run if you bottom out the dial, but i got mine to the point where it kicks on at about the same time as my 350Z stock electric fans kick on when both cars are started and let to sit idle in the sun until the fans kick on. I know its not that accurate a reference point being 2 completely different motors and fans, but i have not yet had any problems with overheating, and my temp gauge has never once gone over 3/8" of the gauge, I also havent had any real serious 85+ degree / and humid days yet out here either so thats probably another factor too. So far im happy with the 17 bucks i spent on it, considering that the stupid shop wired it up originally to always be on and i fixed that problem right away.

Long story short, i wouldnt use the a/c fan switch to drive your radiator fan, its just not right, and for 17 bucks and 15-20 minutes of work, youll be glad you did.
