Hi,

My name is Steve and I'm from Southern California. I am Mechanical Engineering/design student.

A couple of us ME's at school have suggested introducing a new competition for Cali State schools to compete in. Building a "Drift" car.

I come to you guys for help. Part of the requirements is that we 'engineer' our own components but I know this forum is the first place to start. We aquired a 1992 240sx. We have a redtop SR20 sitting on the engine stand.

I am in charge of the motor and it's tuning. (I have a decent amount of experience tuning EFI and more specifically my Impreza Sti).

I have to come within 3% of 350whp in order to complete my objective. Mind you, I will be asking what I need to make that kind of power but I have to 'engineer' this build. I have to calculate intercooler core sizes, compression ratios, cam profiles, and ofcourse what size turbo to use etc blah blah.

I already know that many of you know EXACTLY what I need to hit my mark though.

Anyways, great to be here, I'll be posting pics soon enough. Oh, and just cause I'm not in charge of suspension stuff doesn't mean I'm not going to talk your heads off about it.

-Steve

Question Hi and question

Hi...noob here.

Got a 95 240SX SE I bought a couple of years ago and just paid off.

Bout to do my first easy project on it. Shop told me I needed new outer tie rod ends and tension rod bushings (aka strut arm/strut rod/tension arm bushings - they can't seem to make up their minds what to call these). Wanted to charge me $600 to replace them so I decided now was a good time to pull out my FSM.

Anyway...(rambling a bit here)...getting to the point...

I bought the Chilton manual for my car because it had really nice instructions on changing outer tie rod ends. So I got a wild hair and decided to see if it had a better diagram of the tension rod bushing I had to change than my FSM did. It did, in fact, have a better diagram but several of the components in the diagram have a little symbol beside them of a white x on a black dot. HERE IS THE QUESTION -> what is the stoopid x for? It must be meaningful or they wouldn't have wasted their ink or my time by putting it in there. Furthermore, the book doesn't have a legend or description of the symbols in exploded diagrams anywhere. Does anybody know what this means. I can provide a scan if that would be helpful.

Hello, my name is Mike from Austin Texas. I've been messing with the 240sx for about 6 years now. I am now in Nagoya Japan waiting on a drivers license. They make it a pain in the ass here. For work, I do graphic and web design. I am learning Japanese because I want to attend a auto design school in Tokyo. I can also get parts for my car at JP prices. If you are coming to Japan, I can give you a few pointers.

Hello everyone! My name is Mike, I live in the NorthEast part of Houston. Originally from Denver which I still call home. I'm an Old Fart, started with Datsun's back when I was 18 . Had a 72' 240Z, Boy do I miss that car. My Wife and I purchased 92' 240SX new from the dealer. That's her car in my avatar and below.

Last year I got the urge to start mod-ing it. Well she only wanted the seats, carpet and new paint. So, I've replaced her seats with 96' S14 seats and put in new carpet. Oh, I also bought her new Enkie's and tires.

Since I no longer could mod her car I bought my own. 90' 240SZ (White Shell in sig)

with a seized KA24E picked it up for $750, bought a DE for it and I'm in the process of rebuilding it, It goes to the machine shop here shortly for all the work necessary for boost... My target WHP range is ~425 to 450. Found tons of rust in the frame rails and drivers side, front, wheel well. So, I then bought the red shell for $50.

I'm restoring the red shell and my plans are to put all new parts in from the ground up. Hopefully by the time I'm done it will last another 15-20 years.

Well glad to be aboard

Mike

Hey, I'm from norcal and I've had a S13 ('91) for about a year and a half now. It's in amazing condition. The only thing that doesn't work is the a/c which I'm going to fix before this summer. I'm new to this forum because I didn't think I was going to be keeping the car for this long, but I am, and I will keep it for even longer. Since driving this car, there's no other car like it. Yes, I'm a girl, but I'm interested in making my car the best it can possibly be, and I'm a fast learner, so we'll see how much I get out of this. Hahah. Anyway! Just saying hi and a short intro!

A while ago my car got hit at a 4-way stop cause a guy didn't stop and it damaged the driver's side rear body and totaled my car. I bought it back because there was no mechanical damage and the only thing that I needed to fix was the body, the alignment, and it dented my exhaust.

I don't have a full picture of my car, but you can see some of it?

Here's a closer picture of the damage:

He hit my rims too and now they have scratches. boo.

Anyways, I wanted to first find a place that I can take this car to to get it's body fixed. Unfortunately, it's really expensive so I want to find a place a little cheaper cause I find it almost not worth it at this moment to fix it up unless it's for a good price. The damage doesn't bother me too much yet, but I'm sure it will soon enough...

I also wanted to learn more information about the A/C system because there's something mysteriously wrong with my A/C because recharging it doesn't work and it doesn't respond to anything on tests? It blows out air, but recharging doesn't work so I don't get it. So, I want to replace the whole system since it uses R12 freons and people no longer use it. Anyway, I want to find somewhere that will do it and won't overcharge me for it. So if anyone knows somewhere reliable, please let me know. Thanks!

Hey, I just bought my first Nissan and it just happened to be a 240SX that's been converted to Sil-Eighty status. It's wicked fast, but I haven't driven it yet (dead fuel pump and needs a retune). I've always been a Honda guy, but when I wrecked my Integra, I needed something new. All the CRXs around DE are crap cans, and Honda never built anything rear-drive, affordable, and modern. I always wanted an S13, so when I found one with all the mods I already wanted (including the Sil-Eighty body), I snapped it up. I am a Freshman at the University of Delaware and a member of the Formula SAE racing team here. And sorry in advance, some of my posts can be a bit long-winded, but worth the extra reading.

Hey everyone.

I just bought my first 240 (I owned Hondas before. ~_~), and am loving it.

It's an 89 SOHC, with only one previous owner. Smogs, and runs pretty well.

It's mainly my DD, but I plan to spend a bit of money for some extra speed. Though the first thing I want to do is remove that ugly rubber spoiler.

Eventually I might swap, but probably not until I hit about 250k miles (170k now, was 160k when I bought it).

I purchased it for $700 from a charity auto auction about 30 miles from my house. Did a simple tune up and replaced the fuel injectors, and so far it's running pretty smooth.

There is a bit of body damage, the driver side door has some gray transfer paint, and a small rounded dent (most likely from a pole?), which will probably pop out pretty clean. Other than that it's just a bit of peeling clear coat on the passenger quarter panel, and faded paint on the bumpers.

There is a CE light on, but when I pulled codes it came up to leaking fuel injectors. Thus the reason for changing them (all 4), though I've yet to reset the light.

Hopefully I can get my camera working for more than 30 seconds so I can get some pictures up.

Hello everyone. My name is Jordan and I'm a nismoholic.....:P Anyway I was researching some info for my S13 and stumbled across your forums. Thus far I'm impressed with the overall wealth of knowledge that can be found here. Additionally everyone here seems to be pretty chill, which is always nice for a forum community.

Anyway I'm from SoCal and have recently returned here just last year after spending five years in Las Vegas. Due to the very restrictive smog laws here I was forced to sell my B14 http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z...n/IMGP0804.jpg
as there was no possible way I could get it to pass a visual inspection out here, let alone smog. This did however provide me with a good opportunity to make the switch to FR...something I've been tempted with for a long time now. Anyhow I just finished remodeling my garage into an engine room and will be towing my S13 out here next month.

Building any kind of tuner in California is a unique challenge in and of itself, so i'll be looking forward to sharing insights with anyone who could help make the road a little less rocky. Especially with regards to dealing with smog rules and police sensitivity to various modifications. I'd like to keep the car as street legal as possible, though i'm willing to bend a few rules here and there.

Anyways I look forward to participating here in these forums.

Peace

hey my name is matt and im in the Chicago southside area. just sold my 98 neon r/t with a nice turbo motor i built and the coolest engine management around...Megasquirt!!! . best time was 13.4 at rt 41 dragway. Always wanted a 240sx and i found a awesome deal so i had to jump on it. I just got a 97 240sx with a r33? skyline front end and 350z blue paintjob for a steal of a price!!! its auto but i dont care, ill be doing some sort of swap in the future. got the car for the awesome body it has, theres two tiny dings in the whole car and absolutely no rust anywhere and the interior is mint!. i figure go with the RWD platform and see what power i can put to the ground. spinning your tires all the way to 65 mph on street tires is no fun with FWD

Sup people! Name's Matt. I currently own a 91' prelude and looking to buy a 240. I just came here to do my homework before buying my sr20DET. Anyway I also belong to preludepower.com and feel like coming here is an abandonment. But w/e I still love my lude.

So here's the deal. I'm in college going broke. I can work all summer and with the help of parents have about 6-7K at my disposal. I've read on here that a basic swap can run about 5-6K so I think I'm good with that. The real problem, or rather problems, is that A.) I've never swapped a motor before and honestly don't have too much hands on experience and B.) I live in CA! this thing is going to be difficult to keep. I've read some suggestions about getting it registered but keeping the cops from catching seems to pose a challenge.

Anyway, just sayin sup. This place seems nice and much more formal than preludepower.com. Good layout, good easy to find info.
