My car is a 5-speed, and I get a lot of harsh vibration and a loud noise comming fomr the shifter at a high RPM. When ever I have rev the engine up past about 3.5k and let my foot off the gas and coast with it still in gear my shifter will start vibrating. If the RPM is really high I get a loud vibrating noise too. This is all lound enough to be heard over my stereo. This is all most noticable on the freeway. No matter what gear I am in, if I let my foot off the gas at an RPM above 3.5k this starts happening.

Also, when I am crusing on the freeway the shifter kind of bobs up and down and side to side. Not violently or anything, just casually moving around.

Im thinking the shifter movement is probably just a worn trans mount, but the vibration and especially the noise, might be because of something else on top of the trans mount.

Does anyone have any idea as to what this could be? Aside from this, the trans shifts and drives fine.

As a replacement trans mount ive been thinking of either he nismo mount or the spl or peakboost mounts. Id like something a little stiffer than stock, but with not too much extra vibration, especially not as much vibration as I have now.

the crappy short shifters tend to vibrate.. if they dont replace the whole top plate of the shift area like the real B&Ms do .. then your gonna have rattles and vibrations... that or your tranny mount bushing is shot

I have the cosmo racing one and the vibrations with mine (more of an obnoxious buzzing) and the source was the aluminum collar that the dust boot fits around. I tried replacing the o-rings that are supposed to seperate it from the shift-shaft but it only muffled it. Gonna weld it up at the shop one of these days.

So you think that welding the collar to the shaft would decrease, if not stop the buzzing? Once I replace my diff and trans bushings, if the buzzing is still there, I may go to my shop and weld it and see what happens.

D1GP, thanks for that link, Ill try that out first beforde I weld it.

I'm pretty sure that's what's causing the headache. Cuz I can grab it through the boot and make it stop.

I have the 1st version of the B&M shifter (considered to be the noisiest of the 2) and it comes with a top plate and everything. I really don't think it has anything to do with the top plate or not. Welding the plate might help, but why bother.

I honestly don't even hear my shifter rattling anymore. Between my coils, adjustable sus. arms, sub-frame collars I have shaking and rattling all the other shit loose who can really tell? It comes with the territory. If you don't like the noises that come with upgrades, by a something else or don't upgrade at all.

Just my pennies worth.

well put, but if my problem can be solved with a couple of tack-welds then why not? :D I'm happy with the other shakes and rattles, they mean "performance" lol

Totally understandable. While I'm not sure what the bellhousing is made of, I do know that with the B&M the plate is alumminum. You'd have to make sure the bellhousing is alumminum otherwise you won't be able to weld it anyway. Just something to think about. Dis-similar metals cannot be welded together.

Dis-similar metals can be welded together. Just not your typical welding methods (arc, mig).

Example : 2" Aluminum hot pipe + brass nipple for the wastegate = Brazing

Might be able to Tig the two but ive never tried.

I do know what your talking about.....Just saying that sometimes there are exceptions to welding indifferant metals.

Sry if i come off as bein a douche...dont mean to be

None taken. I just know that most ppl don't have access to a Tig welder. If your going to Mig or arc weld this it simply won't work.

Luckily I have ny own Tig machine and do my own welding.

I can tolerate normal types of noises that come from mods. I dont mind clicking coilovers or sub frame bushing cracking. My maxima suspension setup makes all kinds of noise. But this vibration and buzzing sound from my shifter is not normal and Ill gladly rip the thing out if I cant fix it. There are points in the RPM band where I dont even want to touch the shifter because all the vibration almost hurts my arm to hold onto it.

WOW! vibration so bad that it hurts to touch the shifter. Thats preety extreme and more than likely, not normal at all. I have a cheap ebay short shifter (doesnt have the top plate like a B&M) and it makes a slight wine/buzzing. But it doesnt get too bad. I have gotten to the point where i dont even hear the shifter anymore.

Im not so sure that welding anything would fix that buzzing sound. Just comes with the territory. When you start to put performance parts on then you are gona get performance noises. Dont expect it to drive like a Lexus.

I would def. get rid of what ever short shifter you have now and go with either a new ebay type or if u have the cash, go with the B&M. Also, make sure you assemble everything properly. Upgrade that tranny mount to a nismo or somethin similar.

Can anyone suggest a trans mount? IM leaning twoards the Nismo one right now. I assume its stiffer than stock but still soft enough for some comfort?
