Well I decided to make my 2nd build thread cause my 1st one was pretty old, I never updated it and on top of that it was in the wrong section.
Here's a link to my old build thread:
http://240sxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57115&highlight=

A lot of things have happened since that time. A little after that thread I installed rotora cross drilled and slotted rotors with Axxis pads and SS lines, after that my car had stayed like that for a while.

I was trying to max out my auto and my suspension pieces until I started to do some major modifications.
Here's some video of my drifting my car with those mods:

I placed 2nd in the advanced competition that event.

After I felt like I had reached full potention with my auto I started to look for manual swap parts. After I found some that I felt were a good price it was time to make a trip all the way up to seattle. I spent all day in Seattle picking up a re-built tranny and the rest of the swap parts. I decided to do the swap myself to save on money cause I was pretty broke at the time with me barely working because I had a lot of hours of school. Doing the swap I ran into every single problem possible, the hardline leaked, I didn't have all the parts, I didn't have the right tools, the driveshaft was missing a piece
Image

It was missing the yoke, the left is the manual driveshaft the right is the auto driveshaft.
After about a week or so of working on the car and getting more parts I had finally finished the swap (and ended up paying more in parts then I wanted to), I turned on the car and well what do you know it wouldn't shift it into gear even after adjusting the master clutch cylinder. I was ultra pissed cause I hit every problem possible (I'm not even mentioning all the problems but trust me I ran into every one of them). The next day I started messing around with the clutch pedal and adjusted it all the way out and it kind of started to go into gear but it would be by force and I would kind of grind sometimes. I got it over to my sponsers shop just in time actually because my clutch master blew and started leaking everywhere.

After we put in a new clutch master the clutch started to work fine but then all 4 of my brakes decided to seize and stop working. It was time for new pads anyways so I purchased some hawk pads (I wanted to try something new) and 4 new calipers and me an my friend installed them in my garage. After that I was pretty happy with my car and the way it was running, well at least other then the engine mounts being pretty cracked.
Here are pics of the new clutch master and the pedals:

I started to hit some more events seeing the potential of the manual.

I felt pretty comfortable with the manual and caught onto it pretty quickly, In that event I placed 3rd in the advanced competition. If anybody wants I can ask my friend to upload video footage of that run.

After getting comfortable with the manual I decided to do a 2-way LSD; finally after a year and a half of drifting I bought a Cusco 2-way.

That same day I got brand new rear tires, falken ziex's and I went and broke in the lsd; boy was that fun, I'll have to get the video of me breaking it in :D. I went up to the touge and started to test the power of the 2-way. I felt strong understeer from the car like I've never felt before and the ziex's are the worst tires I have ever drifted on, they are so unpredictable. Anyways long story short I ended up crashing my car pretty freaking bad (I blame the retarded falken ziex's because after that I went up there with different tires and I was doing 100 times better) and had to drive it home with an increadibly bent tire rod inner, the most twisted lower control arm I've ever seen, slightly bent Topspeed tension rod, and the piece that held in the swaybar was bent too. Off to the junkyards I went, I found myself a new lower control arm but couldn't get a tie rod for a good enough price so I decided to go aftermarket. I bout some JIC Inner Tie Rods and also put on a tanabe raduis bar.
Image

Image

My sponsers didn't have any Topspeed tension rods in stock but they did have 1 JIC tension rod in stock (the other one was taken by my friend when he crashed a couple months prior) so we threw that on. I have one JIC tension rod and 1 Topspeed tension rod lol, but the car doesn't feel different from that.
JIC Tension rod; newer:

Topspeed tension rod; older:

The car felt awsome, the radius bar made a pretty noticible difference in steering and so did the tie rods. The next day I got some better tires and headed out to an event, and did pretty good after I adjusted my clutch master and stopped the clutch from slipping. Btw tie rods kick ass.
Image
Thats not even full counter!

A big event was coming up that required me to have a roll cage so I went ahead and had my sponsers put in a roll cage in my car. I did a 7 point roll cage with door bars and harness bar. I love the cage its one of my favorite things about the car now. Before the event I also did a supra tt fuel pump, I was going to do a z32 fuel pump but they were out of stock so I did the supra one, a MAF, a cone filter, changed my oil to redline, Corbeau SCCA approved harness for the driver side with camlock and had a cheapy harness put in for the passenger side. The reason I put in the harness' was because they had to take out the auto seatbelts because of the cage.

So that kind of brings you guys up to speed with my car and progress. This past friday I got my licience suspended for a year so my car is just going to sit in my driveway for a year (unless I get a hardship permit to get to and from school). I will still be taking the car to events to drift because you don't need a licience to be in an event.

Here are current pictures of the car. The big ass sticker on the side of my car is sponsership, they help me with tires, entry fee, working on the car etc. etc. I don't usually work on my own car, other then oil changes, doing the brakes, and manual swap. This sponsership is also not a full ride sponsership, I still pay for all the parts on my car. Also if your wondering why there are parts of the car where its really dirty it's because their doing work on my backyard and the side of the house and there is dirt EVERYWHERE and it gets all over my car, inside the cracks, inside my car, all over my engine bay; my engine bay is so dirty I didn't even want to take pictures of it. Also if your wondering why I have rear seats since there is a roll cage, its simple, I just love full interior. I also do pay for all the parts myself my parents don't buy me things for my car, they actually hate my car :(

Plans for the car this upcoming year are to do an SR and a couple mods to go with it, get a FRP Urethane body kit, paint the whole car mercedes benz black including interior and engine bay, paint the cage gold, do 5 lug conversion and get a couple different sets of 17" wheels.

Thanks for looking I hope you enjoyed my build thread, leave some comments or if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them. I will update if I remember that I forgot something or when I do something new.

The seat is great, holds me in amazingly, the only thing I didn't really like about it is that it ripped on the side fairly fast from getting in and out of the car (since its a daily driven car); other then that it holds me in great, its surprisengly comfortable for a full bucket seat and it weighs basicly nothing; I'd say without the rails it weighs about 3-5 lbs. The seat actually sits lower then most seats, my friend has a bride seat with corbeau rails like me and his seat sits a bit higher then mine. The side mounts also lets you adjust how high you want the seat to sit. Also if you do get this seat I'd recommend you take out the slide rails, not only does it let you sit a little lower but it also keeps the seat from flexing. When I had sliders the seat would kind of flex when you'd pushed it side to side really hard, but with them out the seat doesn't move at all. It's not noticibly when driving under hard conditions though, I'm probably going to end up putting my sliders back in.

I have a question, when youre drifting do you have to alter the steering at all so its easier to steer whilst drifting? i'm pretty new to this but wouldnt turn the wheel all the way left to all the way right take a long time while youre drifting etc? is there something you did to cut the steering radius so its easier to turn?

Discussion starter · #5 · (Edited)
umm no not really. What you want to do is get used to letting go of the stearing wheel and letting it steer for itself. Its really hard to explain over the internet in words but what I do is I enter a corner and as soon I feel the car losing traction I let go of the steering wheel and let the car countersteer for itself then I grab it at the right moment. Now the right moment is different every single time you go sideways, you have to feel the car and know where your wheels are pointing at all times. Doing the trucker style (what your talking about turning the wheel manually) only last so long and it becomes VERY hard. Watch any good drifting video you will see that they all let go of their steering wheel letting the car steer for itself and then they grab it and adjust it to where it needs to be. Hope it helps, my recommendation is just watch as many drifting videos as possible look at exactly what their doing and try out their techniques, aslo go to events and talk to people that have been doing it for a long time and ask them for their help, I'm sure they'd be more then willing to help you out as long as your not an asshat, we've all been at the beginner stage before so we all know what it feels like.

Update:
Found my dyno sheet when I dyno'd my car before I got my licence suspended. I was pretty surprised for how much the car put out for a SOHC thats 16 years old with only a catback and intake.
Image

Sorry for the picture quality it was taken with my phone. It says 142HP and 143TQ. The first run I did it put out 147hp but they didn't print that sheet :( I'm hoping to do an SR in the next couple months and one of the days I get bored I think I'm going to spray paint the cage gold. Comments feedback appreciated :)

i really like your ride, thumbs up man! what was the big event you were giong to participate in?

I was preparing for drift fest with a $2,000 for first place. I made it to the top 8 and they had me tandem with a guy with 300+ hp and he ended up passing me when I went wide to complete the turn, he actually kind of straightened out but I guess the judges didn't see that. The event was awsome as far as seat time but the judges were locals cause the FD guys couldn't make it; there were a lot of people that weren't happy with the locals as judges. But it let me really get used to my 2-way and my cage with the tons of seat time I had. The first day I blew up 6 tires and the 2nd day I tried to be conservative cause I had no more tires and only blew up 2 tires lol. Thanks for the comments guys :)

Blow a tire as in wear it down so far past the cords that it blows or actually popped a tire? If your actually popping them then try running a lower pressure in the tire.

217Zenki don't be a douchebag, looks like he stated his local shop does.

Who exactly are your sponsor's??? Your parents?
No, a local shop called PRE (performance race engineering). My parents don't pay for anything on my car, its all out of my pocket (except the HID's that my gf just bought me for my b-day).

As in wearing down the tires so far past the cords that they popped. Some of them actually got so hot they started to flake off, and these aren't cheap tires either (Kumho 711/712's), it was just one run after another non-stop so the tire's got so hot they just flaked. Then I started to take little mini-breaks to cool off the car and the tires but I still popped them really quick. Like I said I had TONS of seat time, more seat time then any other event.

Thanks for the comments guys :thumbsup I'll get new pics up soon. My gf just got me HID's for my b-day and installed them but after taking a test drive with them and coming back one went out for some reason :eek4: . I think I fried the ballast, I'm still trying to figure out. So keep a look out for some new updates.

Kumho's have horrible life expectancy. They may be good performance tires but they have terrible longevity. I know a lot of guys at the SEDA events run ZIEX 512's in the rears for smoke reasons and run azeni's in the front. :12dunno maybe a setup to try? I hear they last a hell of a lot longer.

dont paint the cage gold. and keep up the good work!
Haha why not?? I was thinking about either gold, black or silver. I already go the gold paint and am starting to sand down the cage.

I hate hate HATE Ziex's with a passion, they are by far the worst tires I have ever drifted on. They ARE the reason I crashed on on the mt. while drifting. They are the most unpredictible tires I have ever drifted on. One moment they would feel like their starting to slip and the next they start to grip. I was mid drift around a corner when out of no where it starts to grip and I went straight into the curb going 50mph. I know their the reason because a few weeks after I fixed my car I went back up there with different tires and I did fine. Maybe if I had more power they would feel different :12dunno

Drift events have kind of died out over here :( I'm thinking about maybe starting to throw my own events just so I can actually start drifting agian. I totally forgot to update this build with my HID lights so I will soon. I just got a new camera so I'll go and take some new pictures.

Meh what about NW Nissan? Don't they have quite a few meets/events? I know the Seattle scene is pretty big in general but dunno about drift events.
