Ok suddenly my frontend started to make a grinding noise, when I turn it makes the noise. Even when I'm going in a str8 slowing down it makes the grinding noise. Check my bearings they seem to be fine. Not much grease but I just packed it with grease. Checked my cv boots. Torn on both sides. would this cause it to make a grinding sound? Checked my steering pump dosent appear to be leaking, unless it stop pumping??? When I had her jacked up to turn the wheel. It dosent make a sound. But when I lower her. It makes a grinding noise but minimal. It gets louder once I start moving though. I even went as far to taking out the rotor backing piece. Cuz I thought they might be rubbing on the rotor but still the same. Could it be that my steering rack went bad? Please help me out fellas I'm stump

Go to this page http://www.pdm-racing.com/products/suspension.html then move down to the center and look for the article on the S13 Front Top Bearing Mount Insulator. I had the same problem until I replaced my top bearing mounts, I used camber plates instead of these but it's the same part just metal instead of rubber.

It sounds like you've just answered your own question. Based on the description you've posted it sounds like both of your axles are done. Can you see if there is any grease left in the joints? If there is dirt/debris in the grease? If there is grease flung out and on the underbody of the car?

It usually isnt a big deal if the CV boots have busted recently, but if left unfixed for a long time, what happens is dirt/debris get inside the boots and mix with the grease and end up chewing up the joints. The result is the joints bind up on turns (a clicking noise on turns is common) and if its bad enough, you'll hear it when driving straight as well.

I would start at the axles, check the joints out.. if they are in fact the culprit, I'm sure you can get reman axles fairly easily..

my steering rack boot is slightly torn which explains my slow powersteering leak, could I just replace the boot or do I need to get a whole new rack & pinon?

You can replace the boot.no need to replace the rack. And holy thread jack batman. Lol jk, as for the top mount insulater. I dunno I got camber plates also. I'm running megan s right now. So I don't think it could be that

You can change the boot but it will still leak because the seal on the rack itself is bad it will just puddle up in the boot and then leak out from there.

lol i didnt mean to hijack the thread but it reminded me of my powersteering leak with the leaking boot.

so since my seal is damaged on the rack, is there a way to repair that or should i go ahead and get another?

:)

You can replace the oil seal on the rack if you really wanted to.. Just have the shop manual handy for reference..

Most repair facilities won't bother trying to fix the seal and will instead try to sell you the reman rack. Part of that reason may be because the tech might not know how to overhaul a rack oil seal, or more importantly he may not be able to get the correct part from the dealer. So to avoid that headache and to get the customer back on the road ASAP, they'll sell the reman unit..
