Alright, so i sold the honda and grew some balls, bought a s13 and sold the ka and tranny. Now i've bought an rb20 and have lots of ideas to how i should tune it within my budget but would like to get some more opinions. My budget is going to be $2000 stictly on tuning the motor. The turbo or turbos for that matter.. first rb20dett??? just a possibility, must spool quick enough for a drift application, and the rest, well i just don't know what to do. If i go twin turbo, i have a way of getting twin gt30r's installed and done for $2000 but thats all i will be able to do. Can't blow all my money on the motor.

Anyways if you had a stock rb20 in your car and had 2000ish to spend on it what would you do?!

Also any good places to buy 20 parts?

Thanks in advance, sorry for all the questions!

why would u want to twin turbo a RB20 ??? just my opinion ... but it will not do anything .... more a waist of money ...

if i had a rb20 going into my car i would put all of that 2 grand into suspension, brakes, tires, and a service manual for the rb20

you're gonna need injectors first of all as well as a z32 afm if you expect to get anything more than about 300hp, then something to control them with, then you can think about turbo upgrardes. not to sound like an ass but from reading your post you sound like you have a lot of research to do. 2k isnt much of a budget these days unfortunately

no!

no no no, I have all the coilovers, 300zx brakes, sway bars, roll bar not cage, looked after. A twin setup would reduce heat and spool a tiny bit faster but not really enough to notice. Only reason to justify it is to be unique and the first. Pop the hood and bam! haha. I believe I am going with a standalone setup and a single gt30r. Main problem, where to find a good intake maifold so i dont have to run the damn IC piping over and around and everywhere. Also what size throttle body 90mm?, 400 hp is the goal. 450cc injectors? I have a 10,000 total budget and am devoting 2000ish just to the motor, not including already buying and installing the stock rb20. I have a wholesale line on garrett turbos so... please don't get all fired up guys and say im an idiot.

hey man, sorry if we seem like we're being kinda harsh but you have to understand how many of these threads we see every week of people talking about their rb project their gonna get going and blah blah blah so yeah, dont take it too badly when we say stuff like this. if you really do want to do this project then go for it man, we're all here to help you along the way. best thing i can tell you is just do as much research as possible. theres a thread on here that should be easy to find thats about turbo upgrades and in that thread will be a link to another thread on an australian skyline forum that is dedicated entirely to listing different rb20 setups and how much power they made with said setup.

as far as an intake manifold, go with a rips manifold. http://www.ripsltd.com its not cheap but it is THE only manifold for an rb20 that i'd spend my money on.

Hey thanks so much, that was all i was asking for, I did look for other rb setups but everyone seems to only use a boost controller and a metal head gasket and nothin really past that. Sure good for 250hp which is plenty, but I want to take it a little past that. I will post build photos from day 1 soon! Thanks again.

no problem at all. if you track down the link to that australian forum there are a lot of guys making the kind of power you're looking for. carl is actually making about 400hp right now on a gt30r setup, if you're interested just search and track down his build thread

Are you planning to do any maintenance on your RB20? Does your budget cover things like replacing the timing belt+tensioner+guide, water pump, new gaskets, exhaust manifold studs, thermostat, resurface flywheel, upgrade clutch, new rubber hoses, basic head work (valve job, resurface, etc)... Don't forget to inspect the oil pump and crank collar, and do a leakdown test on each cylinder.

After you take care of those basics, and get the bugs worked out of the basic setup, you can look at your 400whp upgrade.. FMIC, GT30, custom oil/cooling lines, custom dump+downpipe, 550cc injectors, FPR, Walbro pump, Z32 maf, boost controller, PowerFC or romtune, Cams (+valve springs), wideband o2 kit, dyno tuning, 3" test pipe, 3" catback.

Yes I am currently doing all the maintenance while the motor in the car is stock, just getting it all ready to start throwing some power at it. Thanks so much for the help!

Found the thread and joined the forum, awesome!

A full 3in exhaust, front mount and a good tune would be better than a mis-matched twin turbo setup.

That 2k is ganna go by quick if ever decide to do some maintance on the motor like water pump, tension/idler pulleys, timing belts, belts, hoses, cooling system, etc. I've spent probably a g or so just on this setup and making it run smooth. Get the car running first and then decide if you need to go twin turbo or w/e. You've never driven a RB20 so how can you expect what it can do? Learn it. Drive it. Love it. Upgrade as neccessary just dont dump 2k on turbos and figure out why car isn't running like it should.

imo make sure you get a full standalone if your shooting for that kind of hp but if you do that there goes your budget for the engine LOL. You should find a obd1 ecu and get a bikirom to do the tuning because that is just as good as the standalone although its a little more hands on because you cant really just take it somwhere and say tune this for me. Biki is still somewhat new and im sure there arent all that many people out there who know how to tune with one as opposed to a more common standalone, haltech for example. GL though sounds like you have your head screwed on pretty tight and arent just throwin around alot of OH MAN THAT WOULD BE COOL IM GONNA DO THAT!! without trying to do some research =]

I have a line on a Motec made standalone and a shop near me can install and tune the car for me for $1100 helps to know the owner.... I was already planning to do this on top of the $2000 anyways. This is getting really expensive, probably realistic turn into a $13000 project and I'll go over my original $10000 budget. You just can't go that far and cheap out on stuff. Thanks for all the help! Does anyone have a link to some full out rb builds? I've searched on this site and was wondering if anyone knew of some top quality builds elsewhere...

hey i was just wondering where your located and if you might still have the stock turbo from your motor, im really poor right now and im doing kind of a back yard turbo setup on my 4kc motor and need a turbo for it im trying to get this done without having to buy too much stuff, and if i do have to spend money i want it to be cheap. Im shootin for 400 bucks max all in, should be easily doable if i do all the work and fabbin myself
