For anyone who cares, I am 27 and I am a Drift fanatic. My room looks like a shrine for drift cars. I eat, drink, sleep drifting. My friends call me Drift King and anything possible in my possesion has "driftisized" with stickers drift names etc. I have a huge collection of Option, Option2, Drift tengoku VHS, DVD's and magazines. Nothing makes me laugh harder than Ken Nomura. Please do not mention the word "Drift" around my girlfriend because she will probably hit you because I probably talked her ear off about drifting. I was contemplating wearing a homemade "drift or go home, FWD sucks" T-shirt to car shows where it is all Hondas, but there are no fellow drifters to protect me from getting whacked in the head with nitrous bottles. I give myself temporary tatoos of the word drift in Japanese and show it off while doing a wierd Japanese style pose.
Anyway, so what is my problem and why am I excited that I can finally drift? I will explain. Years back I started watching Option videos and became interested in drifting. Only thing was that here in my area NO ONE knew what drifting was..., no one heard of SR motors or how to get em, there was no parts for S13's AE86 etc. It was ALL Honda. So I never thought twice about drifting here. I assumed it would just be a dream world that I couldnt be a part of. So I did the worst thing a drifthead could do. I bought a 1998 Civic....spent nearly $30,000 to upgrade it. Turbo rims gauges rice blah blah blah. Luckily I have not riced it too much, I keep it clean and simple, but fast. I loved my car, it was one of the fastest SOHC Civics in the area (13's in the 1/4) I enjoyed driving around and hearing the turbo spool. I thought to myself, I would NEVER sell it. The only problem is, Civics tend to dissappear around here, so I did what any drift head would do. I bought an AE86 chassied Corolla SR5. My excuse was to use it as a beater so I wouldnt have to use the Honda for everyday driving. Truth was, I just wanted to have a drift car without my Honda friends knowing or else they would make fun of me. Unfortunately my girlfriend mentioned I was into drifting and the floodgates opened. "You think you can drift?" HAHAHAHAHA, with that pile of rusty junk? I payed $500 for it at the time. It was so horrible looking. Everyone hated the car. I was a lone semi drifter. I could only drift in the rain with this 23 HP car.
I remember seeing it for the first time. We went behind a Toyota dealership where one of the employees had it parked. He hadnt used it in like forever. It was dirty, missing parts etc. But I didnt care, I popped the hood and amongst the missing caps, intake and wiry mess, I saw the almighty "AE86" on the VIN. I smiled and gave him my $500 and drove away in a big loud exhaust ridden mess of a car. I was all smiles, but my girlfriend and other friend were choking from the horrible fumes it emitted. I was in tears, not from joy, but from the burning sensation of the fumes. My girlfriend was not happy at all with my purchase. She was probably thinking "I wanted him to buy me a Louis Vuitton purse, but he goes ahead and buy this pile of horse crap" The look on my mothers face was priceless. The kind of look you get when you try and hold back your disgust while saying "um...yes...its nice"
After 10 cans of bondo and 4 different colors of spray paint, I decided that I should sell it. I got a VERY good price for it, wont say how much but it was enough to buy my 240SX fastback and have money left over. It was funny how it came to be. A gentleman that comes into my work started talking about putting a new engine in his then 240SX automatic. I asked "wait...the SR20DET!?" and he said "yeh, how yu noh? (hispanic). I said, "well, I am a big fan of the Silvia!" Anyway, turns out he knows squat about drifting, but wanted to build a 240sx Drag car. He previously owned an FC that did 11's, but developed a hatred for Rotaries for some reason. He promised to sell it to me for 2500. That is until he called me to tell me HE SOLD IT! I know some spanish sware words (I am hispanic too) but I am what you call a "******" so I would sound stupid. He said "don worry, eeh wass automatie" Anyways. Eventually, I forgot about owning it and went back to my Civic which was now having its engine rebuilt for more boost potential. He eventually bought another 240SX and started to build it with basic parts, exhaust, rims, ACT clutch, short shifter and some rice additions. About 6 months laterm he calls me out of the blue and offers to sell it to me for 2200. I looked at my girlfriend who was next to me and moved away so that she couldnt here what we were saying. I spoke in spanish to keep it secret...actually it was more like "spanglish". I told him I dont have the money right now, but I thanked him for letting me know. While I was at work, I was fantasizing about 2 leprechauns....I mean the 240sx and I thought, damn I should have taken the car. Nothing a couple weeks of selling blood and sperm cant take care of. I called and asked about the car and again I realized that I dont have the money. He said" Joss geemee two hondreh dowlars deeposeh" I said "YES PLEASE!" That afternoon, I went and dropped off the deposit and he gave me the car. It was in great shape. No rust, body was in great condition. I was wondering how the hell I was gonna pay the rest off! That is when I decided to sell the Corolla. Lucky for me, I got a good enough offer, taht I was able to pay him off right away!
Dont worry, I am almost done.
I wasnt planning on Drifting it. Just wanted to feel what it is like to be in a drift car. I met some kids with 240SX's and they told me that there are Drift Events in the area (www.dgtrials.com)! After I soiled myself and cleaned up, I turned into ANTI HONDA FWD MAN! No longer was I required to settle for a Civic! DRIFTING IS NOW A REALITY FOR ME!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. It was finally here! No more dreaming! This was the best feeling. After years of watching it, now I can participate! Right now it is in the garage collecting dust while I am upgrading it. I am saving the swap for last because I want to have a decent looking car for the Super Street tour which I have attended religiously. I am currently doing exterior (180SX conversion) Suspension (Tein HE) GP sports Titanuim exhaustand I have jsut finished repairing a rust hole I made while trying to scrape paint bubbles off. Swap will be done later this year, so please dont make fun of my 180sx conversion on a KA! I know, I know its like putting type R stickers on a SOHC Civic, or GTR emblems on a Maxima, but I cant afford the swap by September which is when the tour is. But if I can go nuts on a SOHC Civic, BELIEVE me when I tell you that my 240SX will be a bad Biotch within the next couple years.
I guess thats my story, oh and by the way...the kids who made fun of my Corolla "Drift" car... they just bought a 240SX fastback which is now their project car!
