hey,
Im fairly new here and I got a question, does a welded diff perminatly keep the wheel locked together? Cause to corner correctly the inside tire moves at a different rate than the outside. So if its welded then does this not happen. If so dose this mean you would only do this for drifting so you don't just slide off the side of the road in a hard turn. The limited slip allows it to have a difference in the corners but locks them off the line or if you really get on it in a turn right. Probably a dumb question but I didn't know.

You are correct. A locked/welded differential will not let tires move at different speed. A limited slip differential NEVER locks the tires together, it just tries to limit the speed differentiation between the tires.

. Look up a "fozzy locker" I did that in my F-150 and it worked great. It's scary in the rain but great when its dry and swings the rear end out wonderfully with a 150 HP inline 6

thanks im just looking for an alturnative to a $800 lsd. But i still don't want my car to handle like crap, im not looking to drift.

then if your getting a vlsd I would recommend a j30 on because they are less likely to be abused. Mine was a jdm 180sx unit and it was probably abused before being put in my car and then it was abused more. Mine went out early the 2nd drift event. It was probably lacking before hand becaue I noticed I wasnt able to spin my self around on roads (doing a 180) as I used to be able to. Anyways It was obvious it was out from watching the vids of 1 tire burns and then both spinning causing me to spin out. The fulid was nasty and smealt burnt. Now I have one I couldnt stand in a daily driver but I think it will be ok for the track. I feel like having a jdm housing is a waste if your just going to replace the lsd anyways but I guess I do have a more favorable 4.3:1 final ration that isnt offered in the states......

i see what your saying. I'll figure something out. Im in the market but in the immidiate one. So i've got some time to decide.
Thanks

do not weld your diff! it will make it handle differently, be a pain in the ass rain, impossible to drive in snow, and eventually the weld will break and destroy the diff. dont have any experience with the vsld though

dude mine is welded and the only big thing you will notice is that when you are a a slow speed and your turning...somewhat like a four wheel drive when it is engaged but its a minimal price to pay for the fun you will have

Haha, the only time I have ever had/saw a welded diff break is when the weld wasn't done correctly.
And yes they are a pain in the rain, if you decide to be a nimrod and punch it around every corner.
And seriously who drives a 40 in the snow unless you only get an inch or 3 a year, mine 40 is supposed to be parked right now in prep for shitty weather.
Yes it does cause a difference in handling, but you should be expecting that and should know that it is meant only to help in drifting and is not a good idea for a autocross car or a grip designed car.

i say that because a friend from back home welded his diff for drifting and said it was bad after the first day of driving it on the street. a week ago the weld broke loose, and according to my auto service tech teacher they will all break sooner or later causing some serious failure in the back end..

also, when your 16 and broke like i am you cant afford another car to drive in the winter. and for those of us that do have to drive the 40 in less than perfect conditions doing something that will fuck us over in those conditions is not very wise. if you are only drifting, and are never going to try to drive in bad conditions then a welded dif might be fine. but a welded diff limits you in almost every aspect of driving, with the exception of drfting.

I would like to try and fit a S15 helical lsd in my car but I don't have the funds to waste if it doesn't fit into the S13 diff housing.
