So about 2 weeks ago I put Royal Purple max gear 75w-90 in the tranny. After reading up on it and finding out alot of people run it the 300z's and 240's I thought I would give it a try.
On the first drive I noticed it was a little harder to shift than it was before? No leaks, and the tranny was full of gear lube.
After a while I noticed it was progressively getting worse and worse, I switched to a different gear lube and it helped a bit.
Any body run Royal Purple in there trannys, or maybe mine was just a coincidence?
On a side note, my bro started using 10w 30 RP and his oil consumption has gone up considerably.
I also hear that there purple ice coolant additive is corrosive to aluminum.
Opinions?

Hmm. Maybe it was just the trannys time to go. It just seems odd that the day I put it in my tranny goes to shit. If I double clutch its shifts fine, means my syncros are probley shot.
I would like to run redline or amsoil, but no body stocks it.

hi, u put gl-4 or gl-5???? i dont know if truth, but im someplace i read that gl-5 damage the syncronizers of the tranny. if u use gl-4 it supose theres no problem, i dont know. im trying to find redline but i can find it only in on-line stores.

RP is a GL-5. I've heard conflicting stories. I heard that GL-5 is the same as GL-4 with more extreme pressure additive (EP), but I also heard GL-5 is totally different than GL-4.
I also heard that GL-5 will only eat yellow metals above 225 degree F.
So IDK at this point. I wasnt very impressed with RP, considering it was almost $15 a quart.

It would be nice to get a complete answer to this as I will soon be rebuilding my engine and swapping out the trans for a newer one and was planning on using RP when I do.

I used RP, it wasn't any better then what I had in it before which I'm assuming was just generic gear oil. I'm waitin for my next Clutch change to switch to AMSOil as I heard it's like having a whole new tranny...

I have been running mobil1 GL-5 in my tranny for about a year. Honestly, It feels like garbage in there.

I just bought Redline MT-90 for the transmission and lightweight gear oil for the differential. Im going to be swapping the oils over as soon as its gets a bit warmer. On another note, I have loved running mobil1 5w-30 in my KA with a K&N filter.

ohh well. I let you guys know what I think after I swap the oils. :)

+1 on the mobil 1 oil. I switched to 15w-50 mobil 1 full synthetic (used dino 20w-50 before) and my KA loved it. I used to burn oil pretty heavy on WOT, but after switching I haven't noticed any oil burning, and oil consumption went way down.

+2 for mobil1 5-30. i have 190k on my ka motor and i barely burn any oil. but this is a good thread for me cuz im in the process of getting my car ready for a local autox event and my trans has been shifting like crap lately. i am friends with the local distributor of redline so naturally i was thinking of putting that mtl-90 in my trans, but after reading that amsoil article i might consider going with that.

Thats why your trannies suck, your using GL-5 Tranny Fluid, our Trannies require GL-4 Specifically (Softer metal) thus the GL-5 fluid eats at the GL-4 parts...

I know this, now, but did not at the moment when I changed the oil. I doubt there is damage because I barely put 3000 miles on my car last year. If there is I'm not worried, KA trannies are a dime a dozen.

:)
