I pulled a Jr. on my 240sx. The story is that my old friend has an auto mercury cougar hes was asking around trying to find a short shifter for it (autos don't have short shifters). But after pulling apart my center console many times I decided to clean up some stuff and make it look cleaner. Anyone who's ever seen the shifter in an automatic knows its big and it sits up too high and doesn't look good.
Yeah it might be a right hand drive but look at the shifter.(THIS PIC IS NOT MY CAR)

Any body who's wants to do this for whatever reason to make people think you have a 5 speed, or just to clean up your center console. This is what you will do and what you will need...
Stuff needed
1. An assortment of sockets and ratchet
2. Wire cutters
3. A new cotter pin
4. New shift knob and boot
5. Welder
6. Dremal hacksaw or some other cuter

Start by removing your center console, and all the crap for the shifter unbolt the shifter its self pull it upward as you pull it out you will see a cotter pin holding the shift linkage to the bottom of the shifter cut it or pull it out don't loose the washers. Once the shifter is out cut everything off the shifter mounting bracket then cut the shifter it self off as low as you can once the shifter is cut off the base trim the shaft of the shifter to whatever height you want your shifter to be taking in to account the shift nob will raise it up a Lil. Move it over like 3/4 of an inch or whatever you like or what ever looks good then weld it in place you'll have the stub to use at reference to know where to weld it back on (*Warning* Be careful not to get it too hot or you'll catch the rubber bushing on fire.) Start erasable just the way you took it apart. put a new cotter pin in the shift linkage connection bolt down the 4 bolts that hold it down then take the old shifter bezel dremel it on the inside to make the whole bigger not the out side then take your shift boot attach it to the bessel install it along with the shift nob and your done.

The finish Product.

yeah that does look pretty decent. but agreed w/blackrms13 if your gonna put that much effort into making it look like a manual. u might as well do the conversion. unless you buy your lady a 240 & she doesnt wanna learn how to drive a manual

Wow, that looks great, but what do you do to change gears without a button?

I've never seen a "short shifter" in an automatic. Nice. :thumbsup
We completely took out the shift lock button assembly. The only think that I'm somewhat worried about is there is no safety lock between certain gears.
The idea of a short shifter in an automatic srsly makes me jest!
=.=
i have to say final product does look very good
but
why not just do a manual conversion
Matthew doesn't know how to drive stick nor does he really want to learn right now. Watching him drive his old Prelude, which had a manual trans, was quite a sight! :rotflmao
