Ahh the clones.

I think when he first got a Mac it was the SE. Had 1MB of ram and either a 10 or 20mb hard drive. OS5 or OS6 I believe. Got this LaserWriter that was like $6k and bigger than a microwave.

Hard to believe we now have a few servers at work with 64GB of ram.

New guy here just wanting to stop in. Sean told me about this place and the wealth of knowledge that is here si i decided that I had to sign up. I have a 95 240SX SE in autotragic form. Im still in the air as far as what I want to do with the car but i know there are some things that I want to fix right off the bat before I start any "modifications" really. Id like you guy's opinion on this coils: Parts Shop MAX ~COILOVERS~ August 2009 shipment pre-order - Zilvia.net Forums | Nissan 240SX (Silvia) and Z (Fairlady) Car Forum

I have a bunch of rattles coming from the front and rear of the car, im assuming it's suspension related so i figured id just replace it all, hah. BTW everyone just call's me JD...

Todd, Macs have had right mouse buttons for a few years now and the support for right clicking goes waaaay back. Warcraft Two (1995) for example, supports right clicking. I`ve been playing it a lot lately so I would know. Gosh I love Blizzard.
Right clicking works by clicking the right side of the mouse like this. Turn the sound off if you dont wanna hear words like "amazing" and "incredible" over and over again… In my house we use Dell and MS meese all the time. You just plug em in and go like with any other computer. I personally use this mouse daily with my laptop.

Also, I have a PowerMac just like that picture in my room, still runs great on the odd occasion I need it for anything. I think that one is a 680x0 machine though. We had several of those over the years. AND! We have a Syquest and a few cartridges somewhere in our 'junk' collection. I`ve played with some of the clones but never had any in my house. We had a bit of a Mac family back when I was young… three uncles all with Powerbooks and PowerMacs.

Ah, and welcome JD. I`m sure Alan (raen419) will be able to tell you all about the suspension. BTW if the rattles are what I`m thinking they probably are and I`ll tell you for sure when I see the car in person, changing the shocks may not make any difference. Then you`ll have to replace the bushings in the subframe to get rid of that notorious problem.

What about SSL? Is it not secure anymore? That would suck for… everybody.

Yeah the Apple site is looking jacked up on my laptop right now. Ok, it worked now. Looks like they have had the right click deal since 2005.

Oh and hi JD.

Have yall watched that show Wheeler Dealers on HD Theater? They have some brits on there and I like to see the differences in pronounciation. Like they call bushings, bushes. And the hood the bonnet, and the roof the hood (convertable), and the trunk the boot. How are you getting on mate?

At least yall don't have this giant trailing arm bushing that makes your car pull harshly to one side when you drop the hammer. Those things go bad on M3s and probably all E46 all day long. Then again some of those BMW people are a little sensitive. You need new shocked and full bushings and engine/tranny mounts every 40k miles according to them. And don't forget the quibo.

JD the 5spd swap in that thing is pretty simple. The firewall is two sheets of steel fused together. Where the clutch goes on the auto cars the inner is already precut. So you just have to use it as a reference to drill through the second sheet.

Did you make up your mind on the LS3 with hotcam yet? I know I have if I ever get another 240.

Hey JD,
Skip on the cheap looking coilovers on Zilvia an go with a Koni/GC setup. I've seen at least 60 different coilover group buys come and go on Zilvia over the years and every one of them has been "Check out how low these go" or "65000 adjustment levels for shock damping to fine tune your ride!" and not a single one of them ever offered a shock dyno to prove that they were using decent shocks. So, save yourself the time, and go with what is proven to work, or at least go with Tein.

And replace your bushings. That should fix any squaks or rattles coming from underneath the car...unless you have a heat shield rattle.

I'll look into the Koni/CG combo. I haven't made a decision on the LSX swap yet. Lot's of costs involved. Good power and reliability but so much investment into a car that I paid less than 3grand for seems so....irresponsible lol.

Im hoping to meet up w/ Shan today and let me listen to see if he can help me decipher where some of these sounds are coming from.

Not to argue with you señor suspension, but did you read the zilvia post?

Front shock at minimum damping setting: Damping test at 229rpm (.6M/sec) Tension = 625.7KG Compression = 92.9KG
Rear shock at maximum damping setting: Damping test at 191rpm (.5M/sec) Tension = 642.6KG Compression = 99.5KG
Rear shock at minimum damping setting: Damping test at 191rpm (.5M/sec) Tension = 591.8KG Compression = 94.4KG

Not to argue with you señor suspension, but did you read the zilvia post?
I saw all of this too but I'll be the first to admit that I really have no clue what im looking at. I want suspension that will go low, ride decent and make the car handle better all in one. Im not looking to really put the chassis on the ground or anything but id like an aggressive stance.

While Sean may have improved, once apon a time he thought the diff on his S14 was in the front. I would give him the 20 questions before taking his advice on where a noise is coming from.

Then again he also confused me with his momma, but we won't get into that.

The driftshaft will live forever.

just dont let your hamburger out of sight

Ha. Jd`s talked to me enough from my early days to know when to take my word with a grain of salt… or a tablespoon, as the case may be.

Idk about this front differential business… I just didnt realize we were talking about a diff that was still on the car.

Thanks for the hamburger btw, Todd. Er… Mommy. Whatever you like, man. :D

I see no shock dyno. Just numbers with no proper chart to back them up.
Now, if "whoever this famous guy that decided to have these made," says what shocks he used in his "own design" coilovers, I'll show less bias against them. The simple fact of the matter is, EVERY coilover company in the world uses shocks from somebody. And those somebodies are:

Tein, Penske, Ohlins, Koni, Tokico, Kayaba or Bilstein.

Best to worst:
Bilstein (monotube FTW....hence why I bought some. Long life, revalve almost anywhere, good low speed damping)
Penske (for the same reason, but Bilstein is SOOOO much cheaper)
Ohlins (I'd put these above Penske, but eh....to lazy to now)
Koni (twin tube = lower life span, but still VERY good valving. KW uses them on all their Variant 2 and 3 coilovers....main downside to is they have to be revalved by Koni USA, and no one else)
Tein (I heard a rumor that HKS uses Tein shocks, but I've yet to find proof...and don't really care....just know that Tein Flex are worth the money so long as you don't mess up preload, slam them, or find some other dumb way to run out of shock travel)
Tokico (Makes good (not great) OEM shocks for most cars. HP and Blue SUCK. Illuminas are great, but have limited applications)
Kayaba (aka KYB, OEM replacement, and good for soft springs like Eibach Prokit or Sportline...but shock travel is compromised on the latter)

If the shock band isn't on this list, I either forgot it or its crap. Simple truth.

So why not a Bilstein/GC setup?

Ok, I took a look at these coils...yeah, they look pretty nice, but $1k is still a big investment on a "3grand" car. Percentage-wise, that is.

Their stuff may be great, but for that kind of $$ I'd trust Alan's opinion and go with a known commodity.

Then again, if you only pay $3k for a car, you can afford to put some money into it.

Pretty much my line of thinking.
I paid $3200 for my Miata 3 years ago, and I know I've spent around $4k on it since then, lol. Thankfully though, over half of that was spent on replacement parts (light engine rebuild + newish head....).

JD, Bilstein/GC is what I advised a few posts back. The only issue you'll run into in the 240sx world with Bilstein is that their shocks are few and far between; hence why Andy (jsta240) said to go with Koni/GC. And read up on Nissan Road Racing Forums - Powered by vBulletin. There is some good info and parts available through one of their mods that you should definitely look into.

Oh, and Andy has been rolling around on Koni/GC for at least the 6yrs I've known him, so I'd trust his advise if I were you. :D

my internet has been out.....

1) i'll confirm your xbox live friendship when my net at home starts working again
2) we used to have a tandy computer...was funny and had a dot matrix printer hooked up to it. we also still have it. my point with macs is that to the majority of their customers they don't care about the power, ability or anything like that. they care about the image. the average customer that buys an i-whatever is the same person that will be drinking their starbucks late, eating at the newest restaurants and wearing the latest trends. That is their market segment. Folks with money who want computers that are more of a statement rather than a useful item. ok...my rant is over
3) i've installed the GC setup on an integra once and lemme tell you they are garbage. absolute crap. i dont know how much their quality has changed since i was a senior in high school, but it wasn't up to snuff back then. and really....any setup that has on the instructions "take stock bump stops and cut with knife"...something tells me that is some home cooked RandD right there.
4) i had tein SS's on my integra for about 2 years and they were great. felt good for dd and did what i wanted. quality was great and they looked almos brand new the day i took them off the car.
5) todd....just use the dremel cutting wheel and you can convert a mac mouse to have a right click button.
