I was just wondering, i narrowed it down to a bad timing issue, it has gotten worse.

It hunts for idle now and eventually turns off. Burns rich i can smell it from exhaust and actually see the fuel build up. very moist
it will hunt idle very rich and not lean from 11-14 afr

I mean, before this I was driving around with a slight bad pinging. like a very light misfire, I don't even think you can call it that because it was very very delicate. it wouuld happen every 3-7seconds

The other day I put an HKS intake filter and I started it up and I got this hunt for idle. I eventually drove it home about 2-3 miles. And then the next day I turned the car on, it would still continue hunting and then die.

I brought a timing light, but I don't even want to open the valve cover because I'm having a hard time looking for a valve cover gasket at autozone or pepboys. Would anyone know the part number to find it locally? I tried looking up about 3 numbers online, but nothing came up in the system when I tried looking them up.

Could bad timing go bad after a while? possible go worse? I'm sorry folks I'm still learning alot about cars everyday. Any tips would be appreciated

-things to rule out, please double check for me-
I tried adjusting the distributor by sound of the engine, to the most ideal less roughness and pinging. even to the best setting on the distributor, I would still get a ping/misfire. I'm assuming its the timing chain may be off?!?!
new plugs and gapped .28
good maf
no vac leaks
no bov leak (atmos)

stock internals
no injector leaks
good injectors
good fuel lines and regulator
good clutch and tranny flush
new 02sensor
no exhaust leaks
adjust tps .45 closed 4.0 open with the tps disconnected and the right way
a leak at the radiator drain plug because somehow I over tightened it. I forgot koyo is aluminum and I must of stripped it easily.
fresh car oil
battery holds well 13.6 -14.2 only drops when I turn my fans on
safc set to 2in 6 out 1to1 nothing touched for management 0-+
hks intake filter
cleaned iacv through plastic bolt.
small leak in coolant hose behind the engine.
new grounds around engine and the battery ground in the trunk with extra grounds.

umm you don't check your timing with the chain.. you check it off the serpentine belt.

try takin your car to a SRfriendly mechanic nad having him reset all the stuff you tried to listen to by ear...

one of your sensors is dirty.

Yeah I'm gonna agree...when I First had my SR swapped and running it would start, then hunt for idle, run rich, then eventually die...it turned out that it was the physical wiring to the MAF sensor. And Since you replaced the air filter...

I understand how to time by the serp belt. What i was thinking was that the car might be off a tooth n stuff.

As for maf its going to be such a pain in the butt tracing the wire down back to the ecu. Since its wrapped up with the plastic heat protrctor tubing. Ugggh

thanks for leads. Any more would be appreciated thanks

just a guesss to clean up the wiring.. but if it aint throwing codes i'd say your maf is givin you shit.. how much boost are you running

your belt won't be reading a perfect time and your chain is off a tooth

forgot about this one..
I was lookin at the engine bay and there seems to be a ground. Undr the intake mani possible on the iacv. Is the ground for that behind the iacv? (firewallside)? Because its loose.

ecu wiring all checks out. And safc wiring is on the dot.

Will continue to hunt for the maf wires and trace it and tighten the wire near the iacv. Update soon

Update. So i visited that loose wire and it seems like its not on the iacv but under it. Not so sure if the iacv runs down south to the floor because its hard to see through metal. Im assuming the whole iacv piece is what i see through the 4 intake housing.

What i discovered through feel with my hand reaching down there. it feels like a shape of a stock wastegate. Or a small fuel filter type shape. I can tap it a bit. Feels like aluminum and hollow inside. And one end of it has a groove sticking out for a nut to screw in.

tighten the loose wire.. im fint to pop my hood cause i don't know what your describing.. cause the only thing to resemble that is the egr and thats on top and copper in color.. brb

EDIT: the Idle Air Control Valve.. iacv?

It definately cannot be seen it s about slightl bigger than a ping pong.ball. And the groove syickin out is hotizontal. For example of it was a fuel filter it would sit hotizontal. And the hole for oneside of the filter would point to the firewall and the hole being the groove sticking out

cant explain it any better

My concern is the bad idle pinging misfire stall etc thats been happening to my all of a sudden. There was a loosse ground on it . I was hoping this was the solution but im convinced its just a starter. This wire seems like its giing straight to the ecu

loil my bad.. i forgot this was in the SR section.. but yeah that's the starter and i believe it does lead into the ecu. 75% sure.
