Hey all,

Bought this S13 two weeks ago against the wife's wishes because I needed a car to myself and she wasn't here to stop me. It came with 255k on the odometer and a claimed 50k on the engine (I don't think so). It ran well when I got it, but it definitely needed some TLC.

Here are some pictures of the shape it was in when I bought it.

And the reason I decided to buy it:

I figured I would get started on getting the engine running correctly since it is a daily driver and I don't really care what it looks like right now. So far I've gotten the oil changed and replaced plugs and wires. I was happy, after the oil change, to see that the wiper fluid system worked. That prompted me to buy all three wipers because the bugs here in Texas can be pretty bad.
There's a ticking coming from under the valve cover and I can feel something hitting it. Any input is appreciated.

I'm in the process of converting the A/C to r134a and that's brought up some issues. The system is good, no leaks, good vacuum. The only problem is, the A/C compressor is bad. I found a place here in Dallas that remanufactures them and I bought it off eBay (they're closed today and I work during the week) for $105 including tax and shipping, a helluvalot better than $315.

Anyways, gave it a bath yesterday and took some wipes to the wheels and spray to the tires.

From the good side:

So I'm going to get the A/C working probably next weekend before it starts getting really hot down here, then I'm going to start chipping away at the interior. It needs a new dash, center console, clean and paint carpet, sunroof latch, trim for A/C vents, door fabric, seats. My wife has warmed up to the car and says she's going to save up for my birthday in November to get the body work and paint done (we'll see).

This is the color I'm thinking:

Maybe with a thin black pinstripe down the side.

I'm still open to the color for now though.

So I'll update as I get it fixed up, not going to be modding any time soon, just having fun with it right now.

Parts ordered:

A/C compressor - $105 including shipping - Gold Auto Parts - Remanufactured
Idler Pulley - $32 special ordered - O'reilly's
Sunroof Handle Plastic Base Cover (No. 91714) - ~$20 including shipping - NissanPartsZone.com

Car actually looks like it's in pretty good shape, and I can't imagine there's much rust on it, being in Texas. I do like that blue, and would like it better if you converted your car with the Kouki parts too. ;)

That's my son. He's in Ahdald's 'ed ca' (Ronald's red car) as apposed to daddy's 'ed ca'. He just turned three. Now we have something to do on my days off besides sit around watching Thomas the Tank Engine.

Edit:
Here's a fun little game.
See if you can spot the "One of these things is not like the other" on the big linked picture. You'll have to zoom in to max size.

Love that color blue, and of course it'd deffintily look good with the Kouki parts

I saw! Front rim has Nissan center cap, and rear wheel has Jeep center cap

Sunroof Latch Part No. 91714 ordered!

So I've been reading and that ticking noise is described as what was told to me when I bought it. I'm seeing a lot of "timing chain" quotes. I haven't gotten a repair manual yet, and I haven't read anything specific yet as to the fix. From experience, is this hard to fix? If so, is it cheap without paying for the labor? One of my friends is a master mechanic and I need to use him before he leaves for the Army on the 26th.

He's one of those guys where the best currency is a case of beer.

Edit: Apparently, this ticking/rattling/knocking noise is infamous for the KA and is somewhat of a lengthy process, albeit doesn't cost shit to do (if you can do it yourself). I hate to link another forum (and maybe this has been posted here before) but, http://forums.nicoclub.com/how-to-fix-your-timing-chain-rattle-t105618.html. MODs, if this link needs to be deleted, by all means do it. But for the sake of, well, everyone on this forum, from what I can tell this needs to be here. If this has been posted before and I missed it, delete this whole edit.

Just took the car for the first 1st to 5th run at full RPM's. Damn that was fun!! It's starting to feel like I'm 16 again with my 280. Those runs are going to be few and far between though until I'm sure that everything is right with the engine. BTW, my 280, blew it twice. I'm not 16 anymore. I'm not 16 anymore.

Got the A/C compressor in the mail a couple days ago. Headed over to my friend's house soon for some help installing it.

Edit:
So I thought that getting the other things on my list to go along with the compressor would be simple.
Well, apparently no one in Dallas has an idler pulley except at the warehouse, so that's coming to O'Reilly's on Monday and we'll do it next weekend. *sigh*

on that timing chain fix, its a pretty simple and straight forward "repair" even though the only thing you are fixin is a rattle. set aside a couple hours so you have no reason to rush it, an you can do like i did when i did this an have the lady paint the valve cover up for you to freshen the engine bay a lil bit.

pair this fix with a efan, taurus sho, altima dual fans (i had the sho fan, worked great but will have to be trimmed to fit if yours is an autotragic), and you will be able to hear the sound of the engine reving minus rattle and whooooosh from the clutch fan, big improvement imo.

Got the Idler Pulley so we're all set to FINALLY complete this AC conversion.
Also, the Sunroof Latch is coming today and I'm pretty sure I can do that on my own. Although, I kinda glanced at where the Sunroof Latch goes and I'm not sure how to get the old broken one off, but I'll figure it out. I'm getting so annoyed with the whistling from the sunroof and the only air available being with the windows down. I'm excited to get these things done.

Edit:
So I figured, as I am going to be making a lot of updates, there is no need to post every time I order something. Needless to say, the part that I ordered for the sunroof was not the only part I needed. I have edited my original post with parts that I have ordered and where I got them from. If there is a major part ordered, I will post to bump the thread, but that is all.

welcome to the forum. nice find on the car. .......... and i see you live in dallas, what part of dallas do you live in, because i live in garland

Welcome to the forum! I haven't personally fixed the timing chain on my S13 (because I never had to), but from what I've read/heard it's pretty straight forward. It's a common problem with 240's though.

I like the blue you've chosen. One of the guys I know here locally has a similar (if not the same) blue as the one you posted and it looks awesome in person. Here's some pics if you wanted to check it out:

DarkImmortal972, for the time being I live in Forney, but I will be moving to North Carrollton here pretty soon. A2ThaK, that's pretty much the color I'm looking at, if not a little bit lighter.

By the way, A/C is finally working. Got it done last night. It took 9 hours for my friend to do it. We had to rig an air compressor to blow out all the left over r134 from the last try, replace the A/C compressor, rethread one of the A/C compressor threads, then vacuum and fill the line. That shit is cold though. Still need to get the wiring looked at because, instead of replacing the A/C compressor, the last guy that owned it rigged a switch to the side of the center console to turn on the blower so he could have "air". So my A/C only has one speed, MAX!

Edit:
DarkImmortal972, I see that you guys are getting messed up over there in Garland (80 MPH WINDS!!). Hope all is well in the morning. We just had the insurance adjuster come over today to look at our house from Monday morning's storm.
