OK,I'm about to buy a 89 S13,5 speed SOHC with a open Diff and I had a question and I knew just the forum to ask it on! Without buying anything else RIGHT NOW (with the exception of a tune up) can I buy a lsd and drift with that? I plan on saving the money for a 1.5 later down the road but i'd like to get some seat time in. I can get decent/badish tires to drift with. No disrespect to anyone but PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST A WELDED DIFFERENTIAL! I do not want to weld anything on my car unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY! Also can someone please explain what the difference between a mechanical and clutch type LSD are? I greatly appreciate all the help I'm sure i'll get from this thread.

if you plan on drifting, either weld the diff or get a 2 way. you wont be able to slide on a vsld (1.5) for more then 30 min then they tend to unlock.
i just got a nissmo 2 way for sale 550 if your interested

and for future questions such as these try doing some research first

I was told by a shop that works on several tuner cars that a 1.5 is what i'm looking for,why do you suggest a 2 way above all others? and i'll admit i didn't do any research on the different types of lsd's...i'll go do that now...thanks fonix

I had a Nimso 1.5 way and I liked it, but I also did more "grip" racing than drifting. I never had a problem with it unlocking after 30 minutes, when I did drift.

I'm going to start a war here...

I laugh when I see people say a welded is the best way to go, and then look at the approximate power that their car is putting out (I do read build threads ;)). Then, I look at all my buddies in Okinawa that broke welded diffs because they tried to run them in RB and JZ powered cars....Then, I look at the crashes that ensued afterwards, and/or the amount of money they had to put into their driveline after the diff failed.

well they did a shit job at welding them

I know 2 guys that have been running weldeds on their comp cars and 1 is a 400+whp ls3 crate motors and the other is a 400+whp ls2 (they were both ls1's last year)

I have never broken a welded and I have never seen anyone break a welded that was properly done. plus even if you do so what get another for $100.When a welded breaks 9 times out of 10 its just an open diff, it very VERY rare for one to lock the driveline its much more likely for a vlsd to do that though.. Dropping $1k on a clutch type right off the bat is stupid. Get a welded, get some coils, get a bucket seat, and go drift

People that do not know the difference, and do not know the advantage of having a clutch lsd are not a good enough driver to give advice to others about the lsd.

If your advice is a welded is much cheaper and ok to start with, I understand.
If your advice is welded is better, then your smoking crack. Do you really think people spend that kind of money on a part you cannot see just to be a ricer? Most of the people I drift with drool over me having one but wont spend the money themselves.

The 2 biggest things you can try to fight in a drift car are understeer and spinning out. I dont care how many other things you would rather spend your money on (suspension or engine stuff), to fight those 2 things your money would be best spend on a 2 way.
