Alright, rite on guys..I feel i can do this.. and if i go a size bigger i would have to tap the actual shifter plate as well. Should i just tap through the top of the shifter plate while it is assembled, i guess it would prevent metal from going in my trany..
No man, you don't want to tap the shifter plate at all. :fonix:
If you do that it will be impossible to screw through the plate and tranny cause the threads will never match up between the two separate pieces of metal. Trust me, I've been there once before.
Ok check it out, there are two separate parts to this; drilling and tapping. Let's start at square one: you have a hole with jacked threads.
1. Try turning a TAP into the threads at the current size. A lot of times you don't actually have to drill out and tap to a larger size, you might just need to run a tap through the threads to clean them up.
2. If the threads are too far stripped you need to drill it out to the next size up. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the next size tap on the tranny case so you can cut threads into the walls of the hole. Run the tap through slowly, 1/4-1/2 turn at a time and then back it out to keep clearing out the cut metal.
3. Then use a DRILL BIT the same size as the tap you just used and DRILL a hole in the shifter plate, don't tap the plate cause it will be impossible to tighten it down if it has threads holding your bolt.
As for metal shavings in the trans... shit I don't know, I guess you would have to flush it out but I have no experience rigging up something like that.
