Timing adjusted.

The problem with the engine startup was not a ground or anything else like that - the ignition switch was bad. I just happened to have a spare in my box of parts that came with the RB25 from Ebay and replaced it. Problem solved.

Have been tweaking the idle, found a glitch with my fans and got them working perfectly again.

Did some fiberglass repair on my C-West bumper (not pleased ... yet)

and start troubleshooting some of that rocker panel rust. Screwdriver went right through the metal so now I have to cut and weld a new piece in.

Back end desperately needs alignment and it's pouring down rain or I would go and get a quick one to hold me over.

hey rad. wondering if you would show how a fan relay is wired up?? I seen some videos online and I still can't figure out myself??

I checked my battery voltage tonight after driving (it struggled to start on my return journey home from a Sunday drive). The battery showed 13.2 volts, so it seems like the alternator is doing it's job charging the battery.

I have not changed the startup settings at all in the ECU after the engine build. The only things I'm having trouble with are the enrichment and idle settings. Sometimes if you idle and turn on a fan or something it goes pig rich now so I need to redo some of that. Wonder why the other stuff would be off after a rebuild? I mean surely it can't require a full retune of the same car? =\

When I changed my oil tonight at 150miles I found my plug on the IACV wasn't firmly attached, so that may be some of my idle issue there. However, the strange slow to start issue persists.

It seems to be more prominent when the car has recently been driven, but if I let it sit for several hours it starts better.

I added an extra 8gauge ground wire on the alternator already, in addition to the normal one that's included with the harness. It was part of my engine grounding kit that I installed way back when.

I was just going through old photos / receipts etc. to make a log book of when I did major upgrades for fun, and also because I want to keep track of maintenance items moving forward. Since I started working on my own cars, I do all of my own work on the other vehicles too (including the Datsun).

Here's the sad thing...

From 1996 to 2008 I put around 153,967 miles on the car. Around 2,500 miles or so were on the RB20DET before it blew up (guessing here). From 2008 to 2013 I put a measly 17,831 miles on the car. That's around 3,000 miles a year on that RB25DET.

It sucks to think I put so much money into the RB20 & first RB25DET to only get that kind of mileage out of it. Yeah, it's been a lot of fun and it's not a daily driver... but wow. The first 12 years of the car averaged out to 12,830 miles a year.

I'm hoping with the new rebuild I can get another 150k out of the engine. I don't think I'll be tracking it again, but we'll see.. =\

Half the fun is building it.

But since this is like the 3rd time I'd rather have it last and enjoy it, but move on to the next build instead of rehashing this one over and over and over. Learned a lot this time around. Had it out for a nice Sunday drive yesterday. SILKY SMOOTH...

so how did you run a round on the alt unit?? when I attempted this I kept blowing alt fuses!!

and don't let that stop you from driving on the track rad!!! I too have been through 3 of these rb engines. and I plan to run some auto cross/track events next year.
