i know what the problem is but i was just wondering if ne1 else has ever had it its the bushings on the differencial let me know its a knocking noise inside the car when you shift hard or brake thanxx steve

My '95 240 had the same problem. It actually sounded like I had a keg in my trunk and it just rolled from front to back, THUMP, THUMP. Nissan does NOT sell just the bushing. You have to buy a complete rear member(Nissan part#55400-68F15) which sells for close to $500, OR, you could be like me, the "not so rich guy" that I am, and actually make your own bushing. It required (8) 2.5" to 3.0" rounded rubber bushings about 1/8" thick (from any local hardware store) to sort-of make your own bushing. I tell you what, It sure did make a difference! No more THUMP, and a smoother ride. Hope this helps.

Man just jack the whole back of your car up and put on stands. Don't put stands on axel or any part of the rear suspension. Once in the air make sure the emergency break is locked and rotate your rear tires back and forth. It will only move about an inch and a half in both directions. I used two rubber disc(bushings) about three inches in diameter with a one and a half inch hole. You have to take a little brace off on each side and undo the nut holding the the sub frame bar. I split the bushings and slid them in to place on the top side(it fit better that way). Put the jack under the diff. and that will push the sub frame back up into position to put the little brace and nuts on again. Two months and still hanging in there. Sure beats new bushings at 90 dollars a set.

Damn I really hope its not my diff bushings? Quick question for the people with bad diff bushings, did anyone try installing subframe spacers? DId it help?
Also do sometimes when you stop, and then acclerate, does it feel like its kinda drag a little bit?
Thanks

Evil98, could you describe some of the side effects of the metal bushings. I looked for metal bushings (being that my sub frame are metal, and it doesn't bother me) but I couldn't find any and SPL doesn't think any are made either.

Would any machine shop being to pull this off? The reason I ask is b\c there is a "machine shop" near my home town but he does howning (sp? Cylinder smoothing) boring and that sort. I didn't see a machine for a metal punching or fabrication.

Summary:

-More Side effects of the metal bushings.
-Describe in somewhat more detail the type of shop and the instructions I need to give. (I don't have bushings on there now ....... metal to metal action right now.)

Bushings lets there be a tiny bit of play, they also absorb some vibration and shock. But on the diff. it really doesnt matter. Your dif is just gonna stay there, there will be no give when power it put down. Id say go head and do it. Might not be worth it with an open dif though.

I have a 91 Z32 LSD in my car. Not sure who you were referring to.

On having a machine shop fab those bushings, whould they need to see the original bushings to make them, again I am driving with only the back 2 bushings. The drive shaft side bushings aren't there.

Hmmmm.....I looked under my car and I see all the diff bushings, they look in ok condition.....so this leads me to think that I may need subframe spacers? ALso the my 240sx had a tow hitch on it, if that matters? Usually towing causes premature or more wear on parts but on a 240sx what parts would it affect?
Thanks

Toddles, there gonna need to see the diff to make the metal bushings cause they need the exact side they need to make. Rubber bushing are bigger than the accual seat of the bushings so they will be snug.......if a metal bushing is that size it wont fit.

Kabukie, most likely if they towed anything it would be like a jetski......small uhaul trailer or something of that sort. It wont harm the car really at all, you can pull a jetski or one of the trailers by hand. And yes I would check the subframe bushings.
