Last week I got tired of listening to timing chain at idle so i took off the vavle cover and upper timing chain cover and removed those two guides, its all nice and quite now. Here are the most important photos. Maybe sometime this week I'll get un-lazy and write a faq.

BTW this is on a 1993 240sx 5 speed

Nope. Not the upper one anyway. And that is according to a trained nissan technician (not me). I read it on ZIlvia.net. Go search if you like.

EDIT:
Thanks for showing me the pics! Mine makes a lot of noise. I will do that once I start working less than 45 hours a week at work. (damn consecutive vacations, when is mine! lol)

i got a SOHC wut would cause the chain to snap?

Timing chain tensioner is my guess.

My 240 experience was with a 1990 5 speed and a lawsuit.

Many of the 89-90 (maybe others) engines had plastic timing chain tensioners, however, only some cars were recalled (I know because I was actually able to get my hands on the internal Nissan recall report which is why I won my lawsuit). I can't understand for the life of me why they weren't all recalled since it was only a 1$ piece.

After some rattling, my engine finally put a rod through the engine one day because the tensioner had failed and the timing chain swung wildly, eating a hole through its casing and mixing the coolant and the oil (if I remember correctly) causing the end of the short block of my engine.

We took Nissan to small claims court and they agreed to pay for the repair costs, however, my dumbass should have asked them for a new engine all together. The engine was never the same since.

I'm surprised I haven't heard much ramblings about this on this site--but I guess the threads about people throwing rods may be related.

Because there is more to it than just a one dollar piece. There is also the labor costs involved, plus the image of the manufacturer. Look at GM they had 3 recalls in 3 days...does that make you feel good about their quality? Also, if it is cheaper to let the part break, and pay a few court settlements, than recalling the part they will let it go. It is all economics.

I just bought new timing chain kit off of ebay for the DOHC. The tensioners and guides are metal but have plastic inserts on them where they contact the chains. Is that okay?

u guys sure do know how to bring up old suff
Man I just love how whenever someone ask a question in these forums people jump on them and tell them to use the search button. And then when someone does just that, there are people who complain that old threads are being brought back up. :happyfing
