I am installing my racing seats and 4 pt harnesses. I was wondering what those of you with harnesses used for mounting them. I have a cusco roll bar ready to install, but it sits a bit high to mount the harnesses to. I was planning on just welding in a cross bar about seat height, but I was looking for alternatives.

defrew, you are correct, you should attach it to a bar behind the seat, not to the floor behind the seat if that's what you mean when you say chassis. By bolting it to the floor, when put under extreme stress like in a wreck it will pull on your shoulders towards the floor compressing your spine, if you attach it to a bar directly behind the seat it simply pulls backwards back into the seat, not affecting your spine... since you already have a rollbar go ahead and do what you were planning on.

well ive seen it strapped to the piece of sheet metal that the backseats rest on and the guy had just made brackets behind them. But since you got a cage thats just as good

the guy on trucks did an install on this and talked about why you need to attach them on the bar. same reason klh6686 mentioned. if its not perpendicular to your spine, you're gonna get hurt. i'd say if you dont think so, try it out, but that might not be a good idea.

People, people. Lets listen to reason here... Everyone saying that it should mount to the chassis is not saying take the belt directly down and mount it just behind the drivers seat. They are saying bolt it to the chassis further back, most likely the ledge where the trunk drops off at the back seat. That's about where I'd bolt mine, unless you could put it on the rear STB... but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be the best idea. Mounting it that far back on the trunk ledge would be fine and would be as good as having a bar right there like that sparco one.

Since you are on the topic of roll bars and 4 point harnesses I figure I will ask a question I have had for a while. I see lots of harnesses with the clips on the ends that are made for eye hooks. If I had a roll bar with a harness bar behind my seats, would I just pull these hook brackets off of the harness and then wrap the harness over the bar a few times and thread it back through buckle type thing on the harness? I mean the hook part is held on by those thread through buckles that Im not sure what they are called, they kind of look like a larger version of what you see on a backpack strap that allows it to be adjustable. Do I just pull it out, wrap it around, and thread it back through? Sorry for the confusing post. lol

Thanks for the help everyone. I think i am just going threw with my plan and I am going to weld a cross member onto my roll bar. I understand about mounting back farther on the chassis, but I am afraid that if it get hit from behind, and my trunk get mashed in, my harness will be loose and i will hit my wheel.

lovedabooty: look on that web site Boa posted. On the left hand side they have a link to a PDF that explains about the belt looping.

i had my harness mounted to the rear seatbelt buckle bolt. it seemed to do pretty well there. i had bought a doluck bar but because of te sunroof it would not fit. i now have an s13 coupe so i will mount my harness in the same place. i have read roolbar and 45 degree angle numerous times but have not figured out which would be best

Bunta- That is pretty unsafe. those STB arent THAT strong. yes a cylinder is the strongest object to make something out of when its going to be compressed with equal force, but those tubes would bend in a heart beat if you were to get in a wreck. that or strip the bolts clean off.

sr20damn-that still wouldnt work because the belt is still mounted at a less than perpendicular angle to your spine. that and it would be at an angle to your shoulders. i think this would be just as bad because its not holding your shoulders as well.
