Just as the title says i'm looking in to getting a gsx. my question is it a reliable daily driver? i've heard alot of reviews saying thats its not a daily driver. i'm probably about to try and get myself into college and i've got enough money to get something a little newer probably around 8 to 9 thousand. i can't see myself driving some rinky dink sedan after driving the 240. its completely stock but its still fun to drive, i'm just looking for something a little newer that will give me the same feeling. if you guys have any comments go ahead and shoot....oh one more thing how roomy is an eclipse compared to a 240, i figured it can't get any smaller. i'm 6'4 so room might be a problem.

a gsx....its fine if you dont mod it lol. not much room in the back seats...but i cant imagine it being bigger than a 240 inside.

Problem is, it's hard to find one that isn't modded. The 2nd gen dsm's do have more of the defects and problems mainly it's engine than compared to 1st gen dsm's. These cars usually rate below average in reliability although I don't see any major problems in having one throught college if you keep it stock and it's preventative maintenance has been done but be prepared to spend some money when you start modding.

I'd say if you get one and keep it stock through college you shouldn't have problems. Good luck finding one that isn't modded or without high mileage though because these cars are usually beaten to death.

If you want crank walk get a 2nd gen DSM :thumbsup :thumbsup

I have had my gsx for 2 years now and I would say its been nothing but reliable for me, the back seats have way more room than the 240 and its a much nicer ride I think, it doesnt handle as well as the 240, but thats not why I bought it. You wont be dissapointed, I have put my car through hell and it still runs like new. I am from SC and I have taken 2 trips to Chicago, 2 trips to Virginia, 2 to Florida, North Carolina, 90 plus the whole way and never any trouble and when it rains you never have to worry about hydroplaning! Hope that helpls.

the only downside to have a 2G DSM is the tiny T-25:tears...i should know cause i own a GST spyder w/ basic bolt ons. The T-25 is a weak turbo and it doesnt hold boost to redline. With t-back, intake, ic piping, mbc @ 15psi. I ONLY managed a 14.7 @ 91.xx at LACR (2710ft elevation). The lack of AWD really killed my 60' 2.3 but, on the highway it is a beast with those mods i managed to beat a EVO8 w/ catback by a 1/4 car length from a 40-120mph roll. Right now i am about to buy a EVO 3 16G and ditch the T-25.

my bro had a 95 GSX.. mods were.. GReddy BOV, HKS intake, GReddy Catback, prokit/tokico blues, ACT stage 3 clutch, and.. rims if that counts. I would say it had the same interrior room as the s14, probably a lil more since its a hatchback. handling wise.. it didnt feel as sharp as my s14. reliability.. HA.. axles broke under slightly above normal driving, things just broke.. noisey belts, shit just be fallin out of car, at least thats what my bro told me. shitty 1st gear, almost every 5speed tranny (mated with the 4g6e) had that 1st gear problem, plus other syncro problems. The whole car just felt like it was falling apart. Its was most likey just my bros GSX.. but since then.. he never went back to mitz, he now drives a 2003 Accord V6 coupe, a lil slower, but still quick.

Sorry dude, I think you came to the wrong website to ask about dsm reliability, seems like every other member is an expert in how unreliable a dsm is......... try registering on to some dsm boards and see what the majority of it's owners say about them.

So far there are only 3 dsm owners in this thread (me being one of them(btw i have a gsx too)) and they all say they like the car and it has been reliable for them. All with out drive shaft failures or crankwalk so take it for what it's worth. I think there was a huge study done on crank walk and there was some thing like 6 percent of dsm's suffered from crankwalk and the majority of the cars walked before 60k. And to ASK3XD, just to mention that I would agree my 240 handled way better until last week end. I bought a pair of cheapo ebay bars and now I can take freeway over passes 5 mph faster in my eclipse than in my 240. GET SOME STRUT BARS!!!

The only issue I see with a GSX as a daily driver would be the gas consumption. Turbo+4WD is never good for the wallet in that department. Also, overall it seems like I've heard of far more major failures in mitsubishi cars than other japanese cars, but I don't have much experience with them myself.

Crankwalk is very overrated, heck even esco's miata is subject to crank walk
I agree crankwalk is highly overated, I was one of the ones on here way back in the days saying that.

The 99miata's had an internal #4 thrust bearing problem, engine failure was caused when the thrust bearing was machined too narrow/thin from the factory. It only affected a small percentage of 99' miatas that fell under a certain vin number range and even many of those were fine. A good thing to do when buying a 99' is to check the cranshaft enplay although it's extremely rare nowadays to find a miata with this problem.

I have a 00' miata :happyfing
