i didn't ask about the make up of different types of tungsten rod. i know them well. yes, i have heard of purging, but the cooling titanium puddle must be kept sheiled so as not to affect its strength. purging only helps the penetration side of the weld.

just get a 10ft piece of titanium and have an exhaust shop put 3 bends in it with a mandrel bender.

You can use stainless sleeve clamps to attach it to the downpipe and muffler...

Hangers can be welded to 3" id pieces of pipe and slid over the exhaust piping.

SOHC turbo has jsut about the best idea so far...although i think it would have to be two pieces to get over the rear axel and control arm.... and a special thanks to weldinghank for kinda sticking up for me. Remeber just cause you read how to do it once doesn't mean your gonna go start welding ti. tubing

The 3" on my old 240 had 2 bends, a 20 and 30 degree bend, our exhausts hang down below everything so you can make a very straight exhaust without many problems.

Its just a matter of making 2 perfect bends, then you're set. :thumbsup

its kinda hard to bend titanium
Hmm, if thats true and its not possible to bend, you could use pieces of 3" id stainless where the bends are. slide the titanium into a 3" id elbow, seal it with some high temp RTV and lock it with a sheet metal screw. :thumbsup

If you really took your time and did it right, you COULD make the exhaust yourself without making a single weld.

Hardest part of the whole project is finding some 3" titanium tubing... not exactly an off the shelf sorta thing.

i'm only guessing that because nearly everything i've seen in titanium with the exception of name brand exhausts, its all bends welded together

edit: did some research:

"The fabrication of titanium product forms into complex shapes is routine for many fabricators. These shops recognised long ago that titanium is not an exotic material requiring exotic fabrication techniques. They quickly learned that titanium is handled much like other high performance engineering materials, provided titanium’s unique properties are taken into consideration. "

Tube Bending
Titanium tubing is routinely bent on conventional tube bending equipment. Mandrel benders are recommended particularly for tight bends. Wiper dies and mandrels should be smooth and well lubricated to minimise titanium’s tendency to gall. Bending should be slow. Bends made without a mandrel require larger radii. If smaller radius bends are required, it may be necessary to bend the tubing at 400°-600°F (204°-316°C). Consideration should be given to using heavier wall tubing for tight bends to compensate for thinning which takes place at the tubes outer periphery on bending.
.
Doesnt sound all the intimidating if you're only doing 2 small bends.

I would assuming most shops chop up the pipes like because they dont have mandrel benders and there is less risk of ruining the piece.

SOHC turbo... i don't think u can bend titanium.... thats why they weld it all together.... for example...look at the neuspeed Ti. exhaust... i was watching them in person makin that damn thing...lookd like a pain in the ass.

Just so everyone knows, yes u can bend Ti, but its extremely hard, i think the farthest you can bend it might be like 35 degress. My exhaust is almost perfrectly straight, only 1 bend. and i am using Stainless Steel clamps to hold my glasspack and cat on. *Side note my exhaust runs out the driver side in front of the wheel.

Something else to consider is that very few shops even have a mandrel bender due to the size and cost of the equipment.

In the entire city of Las Vegas I can think of like, 2 machine shops off the top of my head that have mandrel benders.

you can bend Ti more than 35 degrees. you dont have to mandrel bend tubes for them to be smooth...you can heat the section to be bent to 500-600 degrees F or more and you dont get the ripples if you do it right. the heat allows the Ti to become more ductile, allowing your to make smooth bends withought a mandrel bender. this is what im going to do when ever i make a Ti exhaust. go read that link that was posted. it will tell you everything you need to know

its actally pretty smooth. skilled tig welders can make make it so there is a smooth bead inside. if its not then you can sand blast it. if i cant bend the Ti im friggin section welding that mofo its looks bad ass.
