Symptoms of a bad knock sensor? My car seems to surge a little bit throughout the rev range, I'm thinking it might be picking up false knock.
Quite possible. Mine was throwing the knock sensor code and putting my car in fail safe mode because of the timing chain hitting the guide. (it was very loud) Once I fixed that and reset the ecu everything was fine.

And for the guy that doesn't push the gas in more than 3/4 of the way. Sux that it doesn't make power there for you.

semi-hijack, re: knock sensor.

is it possible for that to go bad without throwing a code? I'm still trying to figure out wtf is causing my low-rpm surging when cold... driving me nuts. throwing no codes, all maintenence items replaced - filters, pcv, new plugs and wires, fuel system cleaner.

almost only does it when cold. even at idle, the revs will climb and drop between normal idle and like 1000-1500rpm. then when driving at that same range, it will slow down, surge ahead, back n forth.

never thought of the knock sensor...

I don't think the knock sensor will go or pick up knock without the ecu picking it up. I have changed so many things trying to get rid of my hesitation. I finally found out what it was...Clogged catalytic (sp) converter. I just took it off the other day and that thing was so dark black inside and couldn't see through it. I put a test pipe in it's place and now it doesn't hesitate at all. I didn't think that this would be the problem, but it sure did fix it.

Vacuum leak?

I just bought my 240 two weeks ago and put in 89 octane gas thinking that since the KA24DE was a low compression engine it was ok. I got like 375 miles to the tank and after reading up on this site, I decided to switch to premium 93 octaine. But now, I'm definitely getting less miles per gallon with the higher octane. My driving habits remain the same for both octanes and it seemed like it actually ran a little better with the lower octane too. Any comments?

I really don't think premium fuel is needed in these cars. I just bumped the timing up 5* on my '91, and even with 87 octane I've not noticed any pinging. When I run this tank through I'm going to put in a little 93 octane and see if it makes any difference(which I don't think it will).

However from before I bumped the timing, I didn't notice any mileage difference between 87 and 93 octane when I was experimenting.
