mmkay guys. i just talked to a guy about an 85 rx7. he lives in anniston, alabama and sounds like a real nice guy.the car is a goldish/brownish color, body in good condition,a little paint fadage. he says that there is a problem with the master cylinder and it needs to be replaced. it has under 100k miles (supposedly),5 spd, problems with front and rear windshield wipers and one of the seats has a tear in it. :eek4:

phew....does 975 sound like a good price(this is what he is asking),if not how much should i offer? :supercool
You need to speak to neo, he's owned fc's before :supercool

I WANT AN FC but im scared about the reliability ... dont want to have to go through a rebuild
HA! You'll go through a shitload of rebuilds if you get a rotary. I'd love to get a TII and make it my DD. :thumbsup

Cheaper insurance, and cheaper to buy. :thumbsup

Not true :nono

A rotary from a reputable shop and if the owner knows hot to take care of it and maintain it, it will last you quite a while actually. N/A rotaries last forever btw.

It is true. A lot of rotary owners do go through a lot of rebuilds. Plus, many of these owners don't even bother trying to learn about it. It's not like your basic Honda B18C5 or your Chevy 350.

I almost bought an N/A FC with about 200k on the engine for about $600. All it needed is a new driverside window (someone tried to break into it). The body is flawless so is the interior.

Really!? OMG I thought they were hondas!

Just fuckin with ya, I know what your talking about. I've taught people here about rotaries and I know people that own all generations of rx7's. Most people here that aren't newbs will know quite a bit about them and we have a few that own mazdas(me for example). So you don't need to waste your time explaining the basics like the model name because I know how frustrating it can be talking about something that someone doesn't know about. If their not a newb and you see them throwing technical terms then most likely they know what their talking about.

We aren't like other boards.

Prime Example: www.nopistons.com Jesus, those guys will just go postal on your ass if you mention a car with pistons, not a rotary. They kicked me out because I said Cobra. :rotflmao

just thought i would throw in my two cents: the 1st gen rotory motors are nice. try to find one with low miles. because for some strange reason, the dont like to keep their apex seals. my friends are going out righ tnow in his 81 with 160,xxx. and the car has been in his family for decades, and well taken care of. so even if with the proper service they can go. also, it is cheaper 9 times out of 10 to buy a new motor for those, because finding a place to rebuild them is near impossible where i live. (i dont know about you) ALSO: try an look for the 83 gsl-se or gls-se. i cant remeber which one. anyway it has the 13B fuel injected motor making good power compared to the carbed 12A motor. again these are my 2 cents in dealing with the 1st gen RX-7

When you say a lot of rebuilds, all that means is that you need to get newer apex seals for the motor. that is the only problem you need to fix. typically a boosted 3rd gen rx7 will need newer apex seals every 85k-90k miles. NA rotories indeed last forever. We ditched the 12A in a 1983 1st gen to swap in a SBC 350 with ~375hp. talk about hauling ass. but if you keep the 12A, you will be happy since the car is so light. Just be careful above 90mph, your front end will come off the ground and cause you to piss your pants

Best case scenario is you'd have to replace the seals. A lot of times the motor pops it may decide to send the apex seals right out the exhaust ports(causing a dead turbo on boosted rotaries), other times a seal will get caught in between the rotor and housing, rendering the housing unuseable

I would wait and look for one cheaper. The most that I've paid for a 1st gen is 0.00, and the most I've seen my friend pay for a 1st gen was 500 for a running car. If its in really good shape and or a GSL-SE I can see paying about a 1000 or so for it but you should be able to find those for almost next to nothing if you look hard enough.

I really like my 12a because the motor lasts forever and I'm not proned to the heating problems that the turbo models tend to have. I know people in florida who drive around with bridgeported 12a's without an oilcooler and still not have any heating problems.

Just like any other car don't go and just jump in it and try to drive it hard. Most likely if it has the factory exhaust the cat is shot and you don't wanna be driving around with a plugged exhaust(I was lucky that I had a huge exhaust leak before the cat) The RX-7 require alot of tender love and car and you're gonna have to become your own rotary mechanic. You will find that most RX-7 owners will never take their cars to the shop for anything because most shops are ignorant to rotary engines.

If you can find one for cheap with some minor problems you can pick it up and just fix it yourself because parts are fairly inexpensive.

THE BIGGEST THING YOU NEED TO CHECK FOR IS RUST, ESPECIALLY BENEATH THE STORAGE BINS. This area is proned to rust in all 1st gen RX-7's. You can either remove the entire bin assemble or just unscrew and remove the individual bins and look inside with a flashlight. 99% percent of the time there is gonna be rust there, just look to see how bad it is before handing that cash over.
