hey man...I've done a crap load of research on both motors. As for which one is better, well thats up to the useage. From the info I've gathered, the only main difference is that the SR20DET is a much higher reving motor and is all aluminum ....make it a better autocross motor. But prices for the Sr20DET are also excuding installation, thats like $1500..VS the turbo kit for the KA is very easy to install except fo rthe oil return lines.....basicaly the tubo KA is just cheaper for most people and has greater power capacity due to its Iron block.:assassin

How old is your car? How much mileage do you have on your KA? How hard to you rag on your current engine?

Some of those might have already been answered, but I'm asking them now so I can get them in one place. Answer those and then I'll give you my opinion on what you should get.

Just to refresh my bad memory. It's not recommended to turbo a KA if it was 60,000 or more miles, correct?
60k is perfect, over 100k would be pushing it, but it all depends on how you treat your car. There's no way I'd be able to turbo mine w/ 71k, I rag on it hard because I know one day I'll be replacing the engine (mind you I change the oil and do basic service when I should).

You could probaly replace everything rubber and plastic for under a 1000. I think I saw a kit someplace for 450. A friend with an MR2 spent 1762 (4age) by buying piece by piece. If you have time, I would rebuild my engine no matter what.

I recommend a KA24DET for street for the following reasons:

Strong Block
Large Displacement.
Durable pistons
good compression ratio to start with (ka24de)
parts

You can run less boost and run it quicker than if you were to use a sr20det. Also the Ka24det doesn't need to rev to make power since power can be made with a turbo.

Autocrossing, dragging, whatever. It doesn't matter if it can rev or not. Power is Power. You can move the engine fast(NA) or you can move it strong (Turbo)

Actually...at the UNoN meet in KC 2 summers ago...a turbo KA and an SR that both had upgraded turbos, same power level (as shown on the dyno) in similar cars (similar weight S14s) raced a few times.

The KA+T won 3 times in a row. More down low torque...more area under the curve.
