stick with mobil1 supersyn 10w30 or 15w15.

We use it in all our engines and test stands at garrett, except some of the diesel engines in which we use castrol synthetic. There's been significant testing about oil qualities and breakdown characteristics, so there's a reason we use these oils.

synthetic oils

Mobil 1 oils with the red cap like 15W50 are full synthetic, many of the lesser viscosity synthetic oils are not really synthetic anymore but synthetic blends. This was a long running discussion on some of the motor oil boards a year back. It seems Pennzoil labeled thier oil synthetic (but was really a modified dino oil), FTC sued them to remove the labeling, but after a long legal challenge Pennzoil won! So the term synthetic has become very blurry. The only oil I will use now is the Mobil 1 15w50, but it looks like Mobil is changing it's markerting and starting to label oils by length of service between oil changes, ie 15000 mile oil. I guess this is a way to increase the prices they get for a quart of oil. Hope they don't stop selling the 15W50 under that name. I notice it's no longer avail at Wally world as 15W50 but as 15000 miles between changes. Thanks Pennzoil!!!!!!

Well, that's the point, Mobil1 10W30 maybe easy to find but is no longer a full synthetic, that means you may get coking in your turbo, especially if you don't got a turbo timer. Might as well buy the cheaper synthetic blends now on the shelves. Why are you buying 10W30? To get a synthetic, right? Sorry, but you're not getting what you thought you were getting. Still, most would consider Mobil 1 10W30 a very good oil. But this is more about knowing what you are getting, than about which oil is best. Anyway went to Waaly World yesterday and it seems like they still have 15W50, but now labeled as extended performance 15000 mile 15w50 with a gold cap and an increased price. Maybe later I'll see if I can find a link to that oil discussion.

I can't belive nobody uses redline, I use redline 15w50. From the few articles I've read about motor oil, it's the best you can get. I also use the water wetter. Do any of you have a reason to believe that mobil one is better?

I use the water wetter too in my koyo works good... Redline oil is relatively expensive compared to Mobil 1, that could be the reason more than any other I would imagine...Redline is good motor oil, though. Anyone use royal purple?

redline and royal purple are also good oils, but they're far more expensive than mobil1 for not much of a big gain. Motul oil is really good as well, but hard to find.

Mobil1 is good because its well-priced and nearly top of the line.

WRC cars mostly use Motul oils, F1 uses Mobil1, NASCAR uses Castrol... but those are just because of the sponsoring aspects of each sport. They're all nearly equivalent oils.

i switch it up every oil change. ALWAYS use synthetic (10w30 year-roud) but sometimes ill use Quaker state, Valvoline, or Mobil 1... all depends on what i feel like buying at the time.

However many DSM owners complain about Mobil 1 creating lifter tap for some reason. Not too sure why they would say that... they are most likely just ignorant.

but it all comes down to the fact that as far as price goes for daily driven sr20 that a race oil is just to expensive compared to the next best thing in the mobil one. yes we have our on preference on weight and maybe even brand but fully synthetic is the way to go only reason i asked was depending on weight being the fact that i have heard that turbos do better with the 15w50 especially in the AL summer heat that is quickly approaching but this is just me!!!

its not so much that a certain weight oil is better for turbos or not, it has more to do with the heat generated by the turbos going into the oil. Turbo cars run hotter than NA cars... its a fact, so you want the heavier oil when the car will be running hotter so it stays viscous enough to lubricate all the engine parts.

One very knowledgable guy recommended running a high detergent diesel oil once every 30,000 miles to remove clear varnish? (if you're running a full synthetic) Can't comment myself on clear varnish. I think he was a moderator, some others also in the know seemed to agree. I tried to find the discussion, I think it was on a Nissan and Infinity forum that is now gone, sorry. One other point brought up was the 15W50 and other wide multivisocity synthetics may suffer from viscosity breakdown cause they are very long chain hydrocarbons and he recommended changing these every 3000 miles, not the 15,000 miles advertised by Mobil.
