so i want lsd because, well, its friggin' lsd.
however, i dont want to get charged an arm or leg, let alone both.
so, what is a good price for a lsd, and what alternative uses are there (ie - other types of lsd)

i did some searching around the forum before i posted this...just didnt find a straight enough, or detailed enough, answer.

a new lsd from kazz or any other big name company is gonna cost you anywhere from $800-$900+ average....however, you can pick up a s15 HLSD for around $500-600+ with the proper output shafts....or just swap in a used vlsd from a 300zx, j30, s14, jdm s13, s14, 180sx......etc.....for about $250-400 which i dont think anyone will recommend. depends on what youre willing to spend.

Wanting an LSD just because it's a "friggin' LSD" is pointless. Especially if you don't want to pay an arm or a leg, or both. Determine the goals for your car first. Clutch type LSD's (most expensive) are popular for drifting. Don't know too much about helical diffs but VLSD's are good for autocross or grip driving. Unfortunately VLSD's will eventually wear out. The best bang for the buck option is a welded diff but it will eventually get on your nerves if your car is a daily driver.

i dont know much about HLSD either but ive heard from multiple people that they put more power to the ground then your generic vlsd and are good for drifting. but thats just what i heard, i cant prove it.

personally id go with the kaaz unit, its a good product. I wouldn't go with a vlsd. The prices stated above are the norm, happy hunting. Oh and i wouldnt go with a welded diff unless you want to drag.

can you put a helical diff in a RWD platform?? kuz ive done some reading around the net, and from what i see, helicals are only in FWD and AWD applications in the front diff only, please correct me if i am wrong, because i want to use a Hlsd as opposed to the others

welded diff=low budget way to go.

There's a place in norcal that's associated w/ shock drifting i believe ( a quick search on zilvia will reveal the secrets). If you bring in your open diff to get rid of the core charge, a welded diff from them is something in the neighborhood of 175-225. That sounds like a winner to me. Sure it's annoying for dd and sure it's hell on the rear tires, but jeez, the benefits seem to outweigh the costs vs. a 900 kaaz unit. plus if you're drifting, the tires are an accepted casualty.

welded diffs are fine for drifting...what are you smoking?

I just picked up a used S14 VLSD for the time being. I'm really sick of having my open diff and I got a god deal on it. I"m saving up for the NISMO 1.5 mechanical diff they sell through courtesyparts.com

IMO, Find your goals first like if your mainly daily driving or drifting. Welded diffs are the cheaper route if your into drag or drifiting but will get annoying. I had this for a while and got tired of the tire hops and what not when turning, especially the tire wear. vlsd's are also cheap but like stated will eventually wear out, a few friends of mine have them and like it but I think it's a waste of money. Nismo lsd's are good for the money if your daily driving it and light track use. HLSD's (S15's) are good for auto-x. Kaaz, cusco, deftforce are great if you got the money and plan on making use with it like a lot of track useage. thats all IMO

well, thanks for all of the quick feed back. i'm going to keep doing research on the island here and see what is around. however, my big fear is that i'm going to eventually break down and go to the states or straight from nismo for my lsd.

i've read a few people talking about a lsd being irritating for a daily driver. can you elaberate more? is it based off the type of lsd your using, or is it just in general?

vlsd is not good for grip driving at all. same as open. it acts like open diff untill you break traction, then it locks em up.

clutch type is the best imo. locks really fast and you can still grip drive better then open or vlsd

I own a kaaz 2 way, it chatters when turns are made ,sounds and feels like
rear end is falling apart .Would not change a thing. turns your car into a
hot rod. pos traction. its a blast.
Sounds like you didnt break it in right.

i dont think he has a 2way

it dpends how you install it for the noise.
mine the backlash was spot on somehow, and made no noise unless fluid needed a change bad.

my frineds we didnt do such a hot job and it was a lil noiser, though not that bad.
