Just wondering on the legal limits of parking lot drifting... Can cops just roll up and arrest you or give you a ticket or does the owner of the property have to call first?

Cops can just roll up and give you a ticket. Technically burning out or drifting or w/e your doing could get you a ticket for reckless driving or laying drag. Either one is a moving violation and pushes your insurance up a bit.

Theres a parking lot here that everybody burnsout and drifts in, first they will give you a ticket for reckless driving or speeding or whatever you where doing, :eek4: then they go by how long the black mark is and give you another ticket.

i think its mainly just about the cops... i work at a shop that sells mainly wheels and tires and nearly everybody will do a burnout in the parking lot before or after the new tires get put on...the cops just drive by and act like its not a big deal.

Do you like your driver's license? Okay, then don't do it.

End of discussion.
:werd If the cop is a true dick... He could also get you for destruction of personal property and place you under arrest. So use your brain...

talkin about the parking lot as an owner of my own business i don't like to come into the parking lot and seeing a bunch of burn out marks that doesn't refect real good to your customers unless your just trying to attract teenagers but that's what they mean by destruction of property, there is someone that owns that property. the only way i can stand it if the black marks in the parking lot of my building are from me so i just contradicted myself. oh well drift in parking lots but get away with it if you can't then pay the price.

well we do a lot of street rods and cars with v8's or trucks...a lot are teenagers, but a lot of them are older guys too that just like to show off. and the owner of our store is 65 and loves cars with power....but the main reason he doesnt care is because it brings the customer back faster. what kind of business do you own?

Dont do it. I got a ticket for criminal mischief and unsafe speed for drifting in a Randall's parking lot at 1:00 a.m. I just took defensive driving for the unsafe speed ticket and Im on probation til February for the criminal mischief.

Even if the owner of the store where you are doing burnouts or drifting says you can lay some rubber on his parking lot you can still be just as fucked by cops for two main reasons:
1.Disturbing the peace: you may be allowed to do it in his parking lot but you are being loud as hell squealing your tires so a single complaint and you're fucked.
2.Reckless Driving: yes, it's private property and yes, you have permission to be there however, you are still endangering the lives of others that may be simply walking past the parking lot you are burning tires in. After all, why do you think you have to get insurance for drift events even though you paid for a closed parking lot?

And in CA they have an offense called Exhibition of Speed, which is breaking traction (squealling tires), they LOVE that one.
