OK I want to see some statutes saying all this. How is an SR in a 240 illegal but not illegal in a Silvia legally registered. And how is it not possible to pass emissions with an SR in Cali. If you set the SR and "complete" exhaust system up right to minimize emissions, does it still not pass smog? Do SR's really produce that much emissions? Would this not cause Silvia's to fail as well? If they fail, then how are they registered legally in Cali? (as the circle goes round and round) Like so many, i need to know because i am heading out to San Deigo in 2 years for awhile. I will kill before i give up my SR or my car for that matter

you CANT register a silvia in CA
if someone went through all the testing to make it a legal car here, THEN you could swap a sr20det into your 240, and get it refereed as long as a) the engine was from the sam year car or later b) you had ALL the stock emissions equipment and parts on the engine BUT THE ENGINE MUST MUST MUST COME FROM A CAR THAT IS LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA

california doesnt give a fucking shit if your sr20det spits water out the tailpipe, it is still illegal
i gotta get out of this fucking hippy state :happyfing

^Yup.

California has the crappy 'visual' test. They have a list of engines allowed for each year car and if they're looking inside that bay and dont match the engines...FAIL!!!

As for the silvia...there not fully registered in california as a normal working vehicle like a 240sx. Its more like when you register a car as off road use only (IE: Tracks).

Like i said....its illegal as hell to have an SR20DET here in cali.
It just so happens...nobody gives a flying ****!

Which is also why hardly anybody 97's or 98's with sr's in them. Big gamble to throw an SR in such a nice car then having to have to go through the hair pulling experiance of registering it agter 2 yrs.

i havnt read the past posts, but what i have done is bring the dmv slip that you have with the bar code on top of the paper, find a friend or someone that has a stock 240 same year, whillin to help.. run down to the station with your tags and dash vin on his car...

it has worked one time for me swaping vins and license plate...

in about 2 weeks im doing the same thing, but the smog ref is a friend of mine so he juss said bing the car, and dmv notice and your gold..

just a thought thrown outthere, i mean im sure its hard for some of you to find whilling people to do this for you, its easy for me, i have 5 240sx's in my court alone lol..

goodluck cali smog is killer!

i understand your pain .. TRUST ME . but you need to ask your self , "
do i love my 240 - or do i love my motor?" is it my daily driver ??
i live in LA now. i was a smog tech. up north. -man - i got tired to worriing all the time if ill get pulled over , if ill have my car impounded.
cops are cops , they will own you because they are stupid and they have a guns. and they make up the rules as they go along.
the bar just tells them what to look for. nothing is set in stone.
i sold my s14, i sold my s13 sr and my s13 with rb20det and now i have a new project . a 1973 datsun 620 . no smog no problem.
i have a classic car now - next will be a 4 door 510 -
if you really love your 240. i loved mine , trust me!!! - id just due all susp. and diff and never pop the hood exept for oil changes..

SMOG -IS JUST MONEY FOR THE STATE - thats all it is....
and the state will squeeze you one way or another. :supercool

Thats a good idea as last resort. Swap dash and tag. It's brilliant! lol

yeah...sounds like gold, but what if they look at vin on door?
my smog is comming up again sooner or later, so then what....
crap. Im screwed.

Im having the same problem right now. My Ref date is Feb 3rd but im gonna have to get an extension cuz I just graduated from college, have no job yet and am broke as shit, so I cant afford to do a thing with my car.

But right now im torn between taking it off the street completly and making it a race car or selling it for an FD.

All these ideas sound good about how to get around the law but when thats all said and done im still gonna be scared to spool up on the street for fear I get another Ref ticket. Damn Cali!!!
