Alright so I want to mod my intake. I have a '90 SOHC. I've searched the forum high and low but didn't see (all) the information I needed.

I would really like to put the intake where the battery currently sits, but I was curious what my options were, for that.

First of all, are there any comercial kits to do this? Any commercial kits legal in california? I would like to have this car be legal.... I suppose I can always put the stock intake on everytime i get a smog. Are there key differences between the sohc and dohc intakes? They seem to be sold with different partnumbers without exception, so I assume there is...

I have no problem fabricating my own tube out of PVC if there is no legal (or simply cheap and well engineered way, even if it isn't cali legal)

So say that I either build or buy a tube somewhere, which filter should I put on? I am looking for an inexpensive but competent one, so will take any advice there. Is there an easy way to purchase a cone by the diameter of the tube it connects to? It seems like they are usually bundled with the tubes themselves and the measurements are not given.

Thanks for the help

Only commercial intake that would be legal is injen. I don't really know of any others, but K&N & apex'i would be my choice in filters. I rock the stock intake till I swap in a lower mileaged sohc. Don't use pvc, stick with an aluminum pipe from ebay or somewhere on the forums.
just my $.02. if any misinfo i stand corrected.

Ermm, well, why not PVC? Do people regularly sell aluminum tube intakes which would work? Murphy, above, just sucinctly said that no company sells one that will work for me.

Hmmm. Yeah I'm debating that myself. I'm worried about putting it in the trunk for autocross, however. It would need to be fastened really well. Well, same goes for mounting it on the driver side, but my smaller optima looks like it will squeeze in pretty snug if I just get some sort of strap for the back.

i too agree that the battery should be in the trunk, the red battery cables across the shroud is a bit on the tacky side for me. i'll be designing my own intake for mine this up coming weekend and ill make my own write up along with part numbers and prices, keep an eye out

Awesome. I'd do the same but I don't even have easy access to a decent digital camera.

i've been telling people that relocating the intake to the battery tray and putting the battery in the trunk, was the best intake for the 240sx for years. glad some people are FINALLY catching on.

LOL! i feel the same way.... why is 240sx.org always overlooked...

so u dont need the whole rubber piece of the intake? just cut off 2 inches? anyone recommend doing this or cut more than 2 inchs? im thinkin of cuttin the whole bottom piece that connects to the maf. ( i think like 3 or 4 inchs?)

I did this, my car does not run now, thanks! im so excited to have screwd up car.
Im thinkin cus teh egr hose is not conected to the intake tube. But im trin to figure out where the iacv hose is. well. eitherway, this seemd like a good idea, but its harder then it seems. ALOT harder.
someone needs better pics, also i need a vacuum diagram, or good pics of the hoses. near the t/b

What i did with my car is relocate the battery to the drivers side but first relocate the charcoal canister to the rear passenger side of the engine bay. Now with the canister relocated and out of the way you have plenty of room to lay your battery so its flat and not just crammed in there.

Once i get out of classes i will take a pic of my intake so you will have an idea of what to do.

You can relocate your battery to the truck very inexpensively. Go the the wrecking yard and pull the battery cables out of any BMW that has the battery in the trunk. You could even use the battery mounting box out of the same car or get a universal vented battery box from ebay or summit. If you decide to track the car be prepared to have a battery cut off switch routed to the outside of the car. I have an extra tail light that I will install when I race that has the backup lens drilled to accept the battery cut off switch.
