Ok so i just got my SR running 2 days ago and on a test drive it started missing real bad. I pulled the valve cover and the intake rocker on cylinder 4 came off. Problem is I could only find one of the 2 metal bearings/bushings that sit on top of the valves in the head. I found the smaller of the 2, i think the second one may have fallen in a rear oil passage. I'm going to do what I can to try and find it but I may have to get a new one. Anyone know what this part is or ever have this problem before. Any info is appreciated.

I believe thats a valve shim, someone correct me if I'm wrong. You should be able to get those from phase2, enjuku, or heavythrottle. The problem u have is common, Just get a set of rocker arm stoppers....

I did drain my oil and pulled my lower oilpan, still can't find the thing, think it may have fallen in the passages for oil at the back of the engine/head in which case I can't really get it out without taking off the head and/or upper oil pan. So those are the shims? Anyone know what size I need or how I can find out what size I need. I have the smaller of the two which goes on the 2nd to last intake valve, I'm missing the one for the very furthest intake valve.

Just hope it doesnt block anything.
Search around the head with a magnet (if they are magnetic?).
If it actually gets into the oil pan then the oil pump screen will block it from being sucked up.

U will need to pull the upper oil pan... Nissanpwrds14 had a turbo blow up and we didnt see any shavings in the lower pan or in the oil when drained . But there where tons of shavings in the upper part of the pan.. remove it to ..

I remember using a magnet on them when I was building my engine, so pretty sure they are magnetic.

also check to make sure the shim didnt, go into/under the valve spring, near the valve seal. mine went in there and I had to take a spring retainer off to get to it.

So those pieces of metal that set on top of the valves are shims for sure then? I've been using a magnetic wand to look for it, they are magnetic. That's how I found the first one. Don't you have to take the head off to take the spring retainers off? I don't even want to have to take the upper oil pan off, let alone the head.

Yes they are shims. Notice the rocker arm has a notch for one shim which retains its position and then the other shim is just a shim.

As for the valves, no you dont have to take the head off (its a lot easier though)...I would just put the piston at TDC so that the valve wont actually fall into the engine and you can get it back up.

So if I need to get a new one how do I know what one to get. I found this post but have no idea which one is the one I need:

I'm assuming the USDM SR20DE uses the same valve and rocker setup and I can just order the parts for an early 90s sentra if it come down to that.

So I just looked at teh FSM, I have the shim I'm missing the guide. Apparently the guides are all the same so i should just be able to replace it right? Or do I need to replace the shim because it's a new guide?

Well I tried searching the entire upper head with a magnetic wand, searching the lower oil pan and baffle, blowing air through the rear oil passages, fishing around the upper oil pan the best I could with a magnetic wand, running large magnets across the bottom of the upper oil pan, and a couple other minor things but still no luck. The only thing I can do next is drop the upper oil pan which involves removing the entire cross member, more work than I really have time to do right now. I'm seriously thing about just replacing it and hoping the piece makes it down to the oil pan. I did drive it almost a mile after the rocker came off and didn't have any issues but that doesn't mean I won't have a problem in the future. This shit is so frustrating.

Hey bro, i assure you that the shim fell straight down. I have done it a few times. Everytime the shim was sitting somewhere in the oil pan, stuck on the bottom. Once it was sitting on top of the baffle plate. The nissan dealership has them. I ordered mine for a 1992 2.0 liter sentra - sr20de. They cost about 12 bucks a piece. As long as it's not on top of the head, get a new one from the dealership and move on with life. And like what was said earlier, roll that piston to top dead center and compress that spring then drop it in. It cost like 35 cents to over night these parts from the dealership also. I had a couplte split on me too. so get an extra if you got the funds. peace.

I finally broke down and actually took the upper pan off. It was just sitting in plain view in the back of the upper pan. All thats left to do now is to put everything back together and wait for my RAS to show up. I checked on getting a replacement rocker arm guide and was told it would cost $7.
