its all called stitch welding....and no matter what it will stiffen your chassis, every 2-3" put a 0.5" long weld where the seams in the metal are all over the body. ITR's come with seam welds stock, most full race cars have stitch welding all over the cars not just under the hood or at the suspension mount points. If the seams cant move then the chassis is stiffer. You dont need to add plate steel, or steel tubing. Just strip the paint on the seams, stitch weld the seams, paint over it to prevent rust, then reinstall your interior so no one will know the difference. I willeb stitch welding most of teh seams on my front end this winter when i have time to take the engine out of the track car.....ill most likely do alot of the interior seams also, just because its that easy. If you use a MIG welder, its like writing with a pencile. Just my $0.02, agree or disagree, its nothing to be afraid of....you can read up on stitch welding on most grip racing forums, not everything has to be related to drifting.
Well, I' am likin this idea. But you all think that my dad and I could handle doin this ourselves? Or as well as anyone else reasonably could?

sr20goofus is very correct...

stitch welding is what'cha want... and it cannot hurt. if you get your chassis/frame to stiff in the end you can have cracking issues as its so damn stiff there is no flex what so ever.

i'm in the middle of doing my interior at this moment at some spots of the underbody etc... its easy if you have a mig and the time. i will post pictures this week :thumbsup

I know this thread is a year old but i am interested to see who did what with their cars!!! i am at the point where i am doing all my suspension and things of that sort!!! I am in an auto body technicians course at the local community college and i learned how to weld 2 days ago!!! i know how to stich, spot, tach weld (which ever you wanna call it...though stich is correct!) and i am interested in seeing what spots you guys welded....i'm sure in time i will be able to figure that out on my own due to the knowledge that i am being given by the instructor....but if i could find out ahead of time i'll be ahead of the game!!!!

Thanks!!!

honestly guys..almost everything on a car is compression spot welded. Spot welding is very normal and wont heat up the chassis as it would if you were pulling it. its not going to do anything to the car negativly if you weld in supports to the frame. Make shure when you weld it there is nothing behind it, nothing thats going to interfere with it. and that you MUST DISCONNECT the battery. Other then that i say go for it, verts need support

he's actually refering to stitch welding

well, if he means stitch welding, then my responce still stands, if he is really worried, then take a break from a line, let it cool and restart. Make sure to put corrosion protection on the back and front of the shit your welding after you weld it so it doesnt rust and rot.

also, stitch welding, if you hit a curb or something instead of the spot welds breaking and needing to be realigned and rewelded, you'll have a bent frame. I dont think i'd do too much of it on a street car, but a little here n there isnt terrible for a street machine
