1 gear grinds

hey. So the previous owner i just got my s14 from said the clutch only has 5k miles on it, but sometimes (not always) when im at a dead stop in neutral, and i go to shift into first, the clutch grinds at the shifter for a second before it lets me in first.

anyone know what might be causing this?

sounds like a clutch cable to me, but im not positive. ask fonix
yeah, sounds like you need to bleed the hydraulics in the clutch system.

how would one go about doing that?
Has the car been owned by a "Drifter" prior? When they spin out they like to put alot of wear on the 1st gear synchro by putting force until it goes in.
^thats what i was thinking. maybe first try bleeding the clutch system, "there's a bleeder on the slave cylinder". if that doesn't help try changing your transmission fluid w/something synthetic (as long as its gl-4) like redline mt-90 or whatever is eq. in amsoil. i know it helped my 1st gear engagement a whole lot
thanks for all the replies guys. il try bleeding it, and if that doesnt work, il try changing the tranny fluid. but i actually got it from an old ass asian dude with grey hairs so i dont think he was drifting in it lol. plus there are no mods on it whatsoever. all oem and had regular maintenance checks by the nissan stealership
sounds like my car when i first bought it. chances are it was well kept & you have a great money pit on your hands. not because it will take along of maintenance. but just because you wont be able to stop pouring all your money into it.

yaaaa....plans for intake exhaust and headers....front and rear sway bars...strut bars...s15 conversion (found out its almost the same price as a kouki conversion, so might as well do s15 and be one of the only ones in SD)....and in due time...a turbo.

still some small things i gotta do to it tho before i do that. also plan on getting it dyno tuned eventually.
I'm gonna go with old dirty Trans Fluid. He could also be one of those guys that shoved it in 1st when coming to a stop. I don't understand why ppl do that.
^especially when its so much easier to put it in neutral and ride it out.
While you are at it, do this: THE GARAGE GUIDES - Remove Your Clutch Damper
that seems like a worthwhile project. & op, in that write up it shows you the slave cyinder bleeder i was telling you about
ty everyone. you guys are all great. il make sure to do all of this. is it gunna cost much to change the tranny fluid?

edit: also, i just started m/t last week. ive gotten pretty good. my only problems is in creeping traffic where you roll 3 feet, stop for 30 seconds, roll 3 feet, rinsce and repeat.

is removing the clutch damper going to make it harder for me to drive?
Depending on the fluid you buy it might be cheap or expensive. A good cheap fluid is the Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid. You need 2.5qts.

Also removing the damper will probably make it easier to drive because you'll have more clutch feel.

where would i get said fluid? ive checked all the local auto part stores online and they dont have them. Do i need to internet order them?
napa would have transmission fluid that you can use. autozone and advanced auto generally doesn't carry manual tranny fluid.

ok cool thanks. god this car is just problem after problem. im having a hard time believing anything that old man and his son said. they said it had nothing wrong with it besides clear coat. now theres this problem which is worsening and is affecting the reverse too, i need to have an oil leak fixed and change the oil, needed a new blower motor because the one it came with died on the way home (it was sitting so long, i think it said wtf and died. it had a DEAD SPIDER INSIDE the blower motor!) needs a new shift boot in a bad way, possibly tranny mounts, has an exhaust leak, and the gas tank hose had a kink in it (though this was an ez fix).

fricken lying through their teeth.
