1995 s14 auto to manual swap

1164 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Scoot
Hey there, I currently own a bone stock 95 s14 however I purchased it as an automatic but I would love to do the transfer over to a manual. I have recently acquired some parts for the swap however, I am having trouble finding a transmission. if I still have the stock ka24de DOHC that the car came with is there any other transmissions that would easily be able to be swapped in besides the 5speed from another s14? I have been having trouble finding another manual 5 speed in my area and was wondering if there was another transmission that would work as well.

Welcome.
I'd love to see your S14, even in stock form.
I too started out with an automatic S14 that went through the manual swap.

Transmissions:
1. I would keep an eye out on the marketplace here, facebook marketplace, facebook groups, zilvia, and wherever else for an S14 5 speed transmission.
Any from 1995-1998 should work. That would be your easiest option.

2. You can use an S13 5 speed transmission, however the S14 has a crank position sensor on top of the bellhousing if I remember correctly.
So you would either need to drill some holes and install it onto the S13 bellhousing OR you would have to also buy an S14 manual transmission bellhousing and install that onto the S13 trans.
It's not the worst thing in the world to do, but that's why I recommend finding a manual S14 transmission.

3. You can use an Sr20 transmission with an S14 bell housing. You can't use just any sr20 transmission though, it has to be from a Silvia/180sx ( basically some form of S13 or S14). There was the Nissan 200sx that was a front wheel drive car with an Sr20, sold in the US. You can not use that one. You still end up with having to swap the bellhousing though even if you find one.

These are your options. You can not use the manual transmissions from the 90s nissan altima, those are front wheel drive cars and won't work. The nissan frontier also had a ka24 and had a manual transmission that MAY work, but those transmissions are shorter. Your shifter would need an extension to make it back to the factory hole in the 240sx. You would also need a custom driveshaft made up. I'm not even listing that as an option for you to do because the driveshaft alone probably costs what an s14 transmission would cost you.

Keep browsning the internet, you WILL find an S14 trans.

Very nice!

Mine is also Blue Emerald (FN2 paint code). You did well with getting an SE.

Being 5 lug already helps you immensely with getting some wheels. Mine was just a base model.
Doing the manual swap isn't the worst thing in the world. These are actually one of the easiest cars to do a manual swap on.

My only other advice besides what I said above is to plan for a rebuild. With how old the cars are, these transmissions have had some rough miles put on them.
You may want to start researching on some reputable trans builders in your area.

I will throw out another option here.

Option 4.
You can use a 5 speed transmission from a 1990-1996 300zx ( Z32).
I believe they are largely similar between the N/A and TT 300zx.
They are essentially a stronger S chassis transmission, because they have the same ratios but can handle more power.
I have heard anecdotal stories about shifting feeling a little heavier versus the S14 transmission but that's about it.

With that, it is not a 1 for 1 replacement. You need an adapter kit to go with it.
It says this is $1173.50.
You also need their shifter bracket kit ( I didn't find it) so that's an added cost.
You also need to source a Z32 transmission too.

This is a pricey 5 speed swap but if you decide to start drifting this car or make more power, the z32 trans will hold it.

Remember, drifting will abuse any transmission. You are continually putting shock loads on the trans. There isn't a transmission out there that's like 100% bulletproof to it, they all need some kind of service. There's a video of a 600 or 800 hp ka with a stock s14 5 speed transmission. I have no idea on how long it lasted but it depends.
Drifting/drag racing put a lot more stress on a trans versus doing a track event where you just run laps for 30 minutes at a time.

I don't know what kind of money you have into this swap at this point but around the 2010-2015 time range, it was like $500-800 for all the parts for a S13/s14 5 speed swap.
These parts are now worth more AND have more mileage/abuse on them. So now you have to add rebuild costs to it.

For the S14 Bellhousing Crank Sensor it's not "Required" for the engine to run properly. But it will throw a CEL for the Sensor, it's purely there for Misfire Detection, nothing more nothing less. Last I remember mine ran fine when I smashed it doing a clutch job years ago.
