From looking around it seems like the upgrade "kits" for the sr20 are rediculously overpriced. I'm looking for an internally wastegated turbo that will support about 300whp and bolt into the stock location. The best option i've seen so far is the Garrett T28 from the Pulsar GTiR. Any thoughts???:)

any of the BB S14 Turbos should be able to get you there. theres also the HKS GT series. but the turbo alone is the price of some of the 320 kits from tomei and all. for what your getting with those kits they are nowhere near overpriced. a little jacked because they are imported but not overpriced. (note Im referring to the stock replacement style kits like the Tomei Arms and Power Enterprise kits)

well there are sevral trubos that can complete this job but since you seem to be on a budget then I would have to say a Garret T2830 unit but that will cost around $2,000. You could upgrade to a S15 turbo you will be maxing it out at 300HP. I think with the money you have a rebuilt unit would be the way to go. Really all you need to do is ask some of the members that have swapped turbos like Aubrey(Abailey269) or Shawn(Shawn).. Stubby

I was looking there as well. But like i said i want a turbo that will fit in the stock location. I don't actually have the sr in my engine bay yet so i'm just speculating right now. If i get a manifold with a t3 flange for the t3/to4e will that big old snail be able to physically fit in the stock location with all the other components?

I am currently using the Big28 from forced peformance at 20psi i dynoed at the numbers you see below. Race gas and another 2 psi it should make 350whp. At 17psi it makes 300whp 305wtq. Great for street driving (shoot, i just dusted a SC2 mustang tonight at that boost level--those are the 400+hp (crank) supercharged sean hyland mustangs. He said he dynoed at 388whp, we raced from a roll 2x and from a stop 1x. I had him by numerous car lengths each time)

300whp in a 240sx is a great power to weight ratio :)

Dont forget, you will need the proper fuel and mgmt to handle this power.

The Big28 is a direct bolt on, when i say direct, i mean DIRECT. NOTHING has to be modified.

Thanks Guys

I've had a reco allready to FP.Forced Performance makes some wicked turbos. A friend of mines has a Green on his 2nd gen AT AWD DSM and runs 11.9's all day long!

So i'll look into that FP28:D

Thanks abailey! I've done the forced induction thing before so yes i know i'll need proper fuel and spark delivery.;)

For 300hp to the wheels does anyone think i'll need any internal upgrades to beef up the engine?

No. You definately won't. Provided proper managment. If anything blows it it won't be because you have too much power, it will be from detonation or improper tuning.

NOPE!
but wouldnt hurt! and if ya plan on further power upgrades like a 100 shot or an even bigger turbo, atleast have your rods heat treated, shot peened, and micro polished! Just for peace of mind! (or by some good h beams)
I've slung(as we call it in the south) a couple of rods in my day, using nitrous and turbos, the prob is.. unlike superchargers that latteraly increase boost as the rpms rise, A bigger turbo or serious shot of nitrous, will as the boost hits thats what happens! They do exactly that "HIT" the pistons with unreal force and super high temps and serious cylinder pressure!!! The'll pound the hell outta your pistons and weaken the rods!
I've ridd'n in a coupla heavily modded cars and when the boost comes on...... ..It feels like a fighter jet taking off!
Ya might wanna spring for a thicker head gasket aswell.
-Peace-

Lol, yup, i say i just want 300, but i know when i get there i'm going to want more!:p

There's no question that i'm going to have the bottom end balanced and blue-printed. As long as i've got the block apart i figure i might as well invest in letting Swain coat the pistons and putting in some better rings. Then to top it all off a metal head gasket.

Thanks for the advice.:)

How much did you pay for this turbo?

i've heard of the big 16g "killer" and from RRE's test they have never killed any 16g they installed. Any turbo, imho, that is built to outrank 1 specific turbo is stupid. There is no flow charts or anything for this turbo, how can they say it will kill a big t-28.

#23 · (Edited)
i dont think they named it Killer to downplay any other turbo.
in the case of the Big T28 and the Big T28"Killer", The killer uses a custom compessor housing and big 16g wheel (slightly larger than big 28). meaning you will have a stronger top end pull.
for the same price of a FP Big T28, personally i would look into the Turbochargers.com Big T28 "killer"

most people on here say to go with the fpbig28, it maxes about 350 hp, costs about $700-$800 and bolts onto the stock t-25 flange. www.forcedperformance.com
sweet man you helped me out too, ill be purchasing that turbo and also the bottom mount manifold on www.sr20detperformance.com to go with it. thats 1k for a better kit than the gp sports t28 turbo kit.
