96 ka24de swap into 89, ecu questions

I've found a 96 ka24de I'd like to swap out into my 89 coupe since I've blown my ka24e. only thing it doesn't have is an ecu, I've found a 95 ecu but for an automatic, will this work?

And the other thing I'm wondering about is this...I talked to jason at unstable hybrids and he said that the ecu wiring from 95 and up to 89 is a huge pain...is this really true, or is he just figuring that I'm virtually incompetent, which is really true, however I have smart people to help me ;)

any advice?

thanks

I just swapped a 93 engine/ECU into my 89. It was a fairly easy swap, wiring was very straightforward. Before i put this motor in, i contacted several shops, and they all said that the S14 wiring is much more complex. I'd imagine it's from the s14 being OBD-II.

if you still want to use the 96 motor, i think you can get a s13 wiring harness and ECU, and put an s13 intake manifold and other sensors on it. At least that's the way that it was explained to me.

That is all correct. Chassis differences as well as OBD2 make it more difficult. You can use the 96 motor and just get a 91-93 ECU, harness, distributor, coil, and intake manifold, and it'll swap right over with the same ~4 splices that Russell did...or you can go with the 96, but it'll be more difficult.

For the record, we took an 89 chassis harness and 96 engine harness and spliced them together for a customer once...car ran perfectly. He did the 96 engine into an 89 with the 96 ECU and harness. I believe it was a 96 into an 89...I know for sure it was an S14 motor into a SOHC S13 car.

i have been planning the same swap, but i was going to try and get a s13 ka24de for the simplicity of the engine being from the same chassis, and odb1. what changes need to be done to the SOHC harness to fit a DOHC?

do you happen to have the wiring diagram on that conversion...I talked to jason again today, and he said the same thing everyone else has about using the s13 parts, which sounds like the way to go, but if I can do it myself, I'd like to do the wiring instead of paying a decent chunk of change to have him do the same.

thanks

S13 DOHC harness are pretty plentiful. I would think it would be cheaper to just get one from a yard instead of trying to rewire the SOHC hardness. Unless you were referring to the 4 wires that Dennis was talking about.

I think which wiring harness you use is going to depend on if you want to go OBDII or not. If you swap manifolds I would imaging that the wiring would be very painless and easy to do. Just check out the wiring diagrams and see what needs to be changed.
