i'm thinking i need to drll the top hole of the alt out bigger so i can bolt it to the top bracket. am i correct?

Just drill the top bolt out enought to get the bolt through, should bolt right up after that

I have a KA alt on mine. What you need to do is remove the two upper bracket bolts from the water pump. You will see where the bolts hold the pump and bracket. Once you have the bracket off trim the outer bolt hole by cutting off the lower half of it. So if you are looking at the bracket arm you will want to trim the right most lower half bolt hole. If you wanted to you could cut it off completely, but I prefer leaving some on as you will see. You can now bolt the bracket back on. This time however you will leave the trimmed part of the bracket unbolted. So only bolt the untrimmed part of the bracket back on. The trimmed piece will now sit above the bolt that used to connect it to the water pump. This will give you the needed room to mount the alt. I'll try and get you a pick of what it looks like tomorrow...

huh what two upper brackets? i thougt there was only 1 button and 1 top? and you said two upper ones?

OK yes please post the pics then.

i do have the bracket off now... I only see one.. I dont which two you mean..

but the bracket i took off was held in by 2 14 mm bolts, and i had to remove the water pump pulley to get a wrench in there.

not sure and not understand what u mean by i could cut it off completely? if i cut iff completly wont i need to re-use it again and then have to re-weld?

Dude I said there are two bolt holes not two brackets. I just went out and took a pic. It isn't pretty, but you can see in the pic how the upper portion of the bracket is now resting on the bolt. This is what you need to trim...

I'll take a better pic tomorrow to show you exactly what it looks like...

damn man. Your not very fab-savvy. I'd suggest just getting another rb alternator.

Im sure you have also checked output at the (+) post, checked ground and the 75a alt fuse..?

So you didn't diagnose the alternator as being the problem? I'm sure your alternator needs to be serviced, but it's possible its still in working condition. You ever though about getting it rebuilt?

I wouldn't trust those machines at the auto parts store.

That's why I said you should diagnose to see if it's still working and get it rebuilt rather than doing a hackjob KA alternator.

Use a voltmeter, check for out put at the + post on the backside and black to ground, should be over 13v and vary with throttle speed.

You can get alternators rebuilt for cheap.
